What's so good about Kevin Mitnick? All I've heard about him is he was a hacker who got caught (obviously there's more to it than that but I haven't heard anything else).

Unless his laptop has highly secret and valuable information a laptop's a laptop. With the 15,000 US dollars that one of the laptops went at I could buy stuff which would be much more useful and fun. Then again it might be a worthy investment to buy his laptop.

I can get a book on operating systems published in 1975 for $1 at my library's book sale. Is any of that still prevalent?

of course! anyone who's anyone knows that windows is based on old technology that's just updated bit by bit every couple years... chances are that what you learn from that book may help you to understand windows!
