strange conflict between programs; diagnose me!
ok. heres what im running. i dont want to hear any shit about it either. its my computer. intel celeron @ 1.3ghz 512 MB DDR RAM win xp home sp1 30 gig hd, with about 5 gigs free space. compaq motherboard when i run winamp (2.80 lite) and one certain program; that is java based, my winamp stops playing correctly. it plays like a scratched cdr, but im playing from my drive. i have a few plugins, for playing .shn files and .flac files (lossless digital audio, a whole other great thread) but my memory isnt by anymeans used. the java based program is beta phase, and does use a bit of memory; but last i looked with them both running i still had over 50% of my physical memory free. my cpu rarely goes over 10% with both of them running. they dont seem to be taxing my system in any way that i can find. i went and downloaded what i thought to be updates for the motherboard drivers, but when i installed it it said i didnt need/already had it. i tried setting the winamp priority to 'high' and 'realtime' and setting the other to 'low' or whatever 'below normal' maybe. still does the same shit. i can use windows media player to play mp3 and wav; with no problem, but winamp wont play anything. i downloaded winamp3 just to try, same fucking thing. (i then uninstalled it immediately, thankfully the .shn plugin is written by kind people though, and they installed an option to kill the AOL bullshit now in winamp, so hey, if you want to use winamp3 and dont want that aol bullshit in it, go download the shnamp plugin from http://etree.org) i hae defregged in the last month, and this was going on before that. i really cant think of anything else it could be. there are developers of the java program that i talk to daily, who cant diagnose this. we are at our wits end. so i turn to you.

Re: strange conflict between programs; diagnose me!
try using taks manager to monitor the cpu time. be sure to also have it graph the kernel usage. perhaps the java program is not hogging all the cpu's cycles but is hogging all the time on the kernel and causing winamp to not get its share. this probably isnt the case but jsut a theory im throwing out since i cant think of anyting else.
i have found that wimap (all versions) has a tendency to do what you are describing under heavy system stress. when i insert a CD into a drive it does it as well as when i initially load a game. it seems the java app is using a great deal of resources for a miniscule amount of time which is causing winamp to skip. this is one possible explanation for you not noticing it on the cpu graph.
dont fret over your ram. i have never even gotten close to using all of my 320 megs of SD RAM. you should be more than covered with 512 megs.

Re: strange conflict between programs; diagnose me!
about the ram, I agree... I've got 512 of ddr and I haven't seen it dip much below 200 before... I've been running java apps on my comp for a long time and all I can say is that while they are platform independent, they are by no means quick or easy on system resources... why you see this problem with winamp only is beyond me... I've never had winamp skip before... NEVER...(I have had version 3 since the early build days and still no skipping)... my I inquire as to the nature fot he java app? perhaps it's addressing certain hardware functions that are also in use by winamp? I'm really taking a shot in the dark here but if one is causeing the other to crash or something of the like it has to be a resource problem, kernel, memory, processor or other hardware... at least that's my take... we've already ruled out memory to an extent as well at cpu... I"m thinking perhaps sound? I don't know... I'm just kind of spewing ideas here... not quite sure if they're helpful... but info on the java app would be cool p.s. just athought, but you've installed the latest JRE and all those things right (perhaps the JDK and the updated microsoft JVM)... again.. another idea...

Re: strange conflict between programs; diagnose me!
if you can talk to the people that developed the java programm, ask them how they think java threads and plug-ins are handled in a pipeline, when the HD has to read information constantly without a buffer.

Re: strange conflict between programs; diagnose me!
JRE 1.4, latest java release. the program is furthurnet; its a filesharing program for live shows, shn format. and i talk to the developers daily, basically i work with them doing lots of the non-programming tasks, opping the IRC channel, working on getting new bands, talking to bands that are on our network to make sure theyre cool with it (i got email from billy corgan about SP and Zwan on the network; after i emailed him about 10 times) and other shit. so yeah, i talk to them alot. but none of them can figure it out either, its only me with the problem. someone has suggested that i partition off 20 gigs of the drive for shn only; and have winamp on that partition as well, do you think that could really help? and i changed my task manager to show CPU usage in real time, and also to show kernal usage, but so far no crazy spikes that could be cause for this. quote: i have found that wimap (all versions) has a tendency to do what you are describing under heavy system stress.
if my system is stressin where could it be? this im curious about because i cant find the stress, and i obviously dont want to be putting undue stress on my box for long periods of time. i really dont think that my system is stressing though. im at at a loss. thanks guys, keep em comin. Re: strange conflict between programs; diagnose me!
stress isnt bad. what im suggesting is that maybe its going to 100% cpu usage for a split second that is unnoticable on the graph. also take into account what bsk suggested.
about billy, what exactly did he say?

Re: strange conflict between programs; diagnose me!
it wasnt a suggestion. Although CPUs can handle multiple tasks, its still one command per period thats been worked out in the bottleneck. It has absolutly nothing to do with memory or kernel usage. Thats Java. Around four corners to get where you want makes it impossible for other programs to fade out differences when they are read from the same HD. Think of the HD like a CD-Player in a car when driving off-road. Bumping over a stone is like when Java asks the crowd for attention.

Re: strange conflict between programs; diagnose me!
I'm thinking this has more to do with a conflict rather than a simple lack of resources... you've heard of other people having the same problem as you with furthernet and winamp 2/3? Can you play the song that you've shared through furthernet? it could be a sound device/sharing problem, or parhaps the network settings and resources from furthurnet conflict with those of winamp?(for the browser and usage reporting and CDDB and such...) again... simply ideas

Re: strange conflict between programs; diagnose me!
well... tried playing with the software that you're talking about... they need to work on their delivery system... I had to move all sorts of stuff around just to make work, and even now, it's looking for config files where there are none... gimme a bit and I'll sort it out and get back to you... I use winamp 3 so I'll try it with that first...

Re: strange conflict between programs; diagnose me!
ok... fixed up furthur... it's actually growing on me nice little program... it's got a few bugs and it's a little rough around the edges but no to bad... I like it... now about your problem... I'm sitting here listening to jimmy eat world in winamp with the shn plug-in installed and furthur going in the background... usage? java's using a fairly hefty 26mb or ram, and winamp is using an equally large portion of roughly 20mb... I expected this much from winamp as i'm using a fairly complicated skin... using the default skin it's only 13mb... and keep in mind that's winamp 3... 2.8 uses even less... throughout all this(playing mp3's in winamp and downloading 3 concerts from furthur) processor usage spikes up and down but averages about 5%... kernel usage is even less... problems? none... relevant comp specs: AMD 1800 512mb DDR 80GB HD (ata 100) D-Link 10/100 ethernet (cable modem for connection) Soundblaster live! 129 value

Re: strange conflict between programs; diagnose me!
I've been runnging the software now for about 4-5 hours and I have noticed something strange... it seems that the more you're downloading at once, the more ram the program needs... not that this isn't surprising, it's just that the program, while downloading 5 concerts and uploading one has managed to take up just over 45mb in memory... that's more than adobe photoshop ever does on my computer... the guys who made this need to look at the way they make their netowrk connection and see if they can make it more efficient use of threads... cause 45mb constantly for a program isn't exactly the most efficient thing I've seen... I'm stratched to think of any other type of program that uses up that kind of memory for that amount of time save of course games... and at least you get something nice to look at...

Re: strange conflict between programs; diagnose me!
yeah, furthurnet is still beta, and there are people workin quite hard every day to work out the bugs, its a purely voluntary effort, as well. theres many good people involved though. its all profit free as well, no spyware in it, and its completely open source, so if you wanna look at the source code it can be found at sourceforge. theres a new release coming out real soon that has some of the memory leaks taken care of, look for it to be out this week, with some cool new features as well.
my problem seems to be unique to me, a few others have had it, but they were running significantly less memory than i am. it also happens as soon as i open furthurnet, currently i have 0 downloads and 0 uploads, just cuz im trying to work out this kink, and it still happens. as soon as i open furthurnet winamp gets screwy. i also have lots of winamp options off (and im only on the lite version) like CDDB. i dont need that shit, cuz i really only listen to live shows from shns and theyre not in the CDDB and i couldnt care less if they ever are.
i appreciate all the suggestions guys. and im glad youre finding a use for furthurnet, macdonalder. check out the chatroom, im one of the channel ops. be nice though!

Re: strange conflict between programs; diagnose me!
well, heres a twist. its purely a java problem. today, i was cruisin around, lookin for some new toys, and got a webpage that uses java. there goes my song. and then, everything got all weird. im gonna have a hard time describing it, cuz ive never seen it before. but my pointer would flash, anwhere on the desktop. and when i would hover over something, the box that pops up would go in and out, and kinda shake. as soon as i closed the page it was all back to normal. so ive been out looking for some documentation of my make of computer and drivers having java conflicts, but i cant find anything yet. any suggestions now that we know that it has nothing to do with the writing of data?

Re: strange conflict between programs; diagnose me!
I've written java applets before, and when you're drawing to the scren in an applet some things other than the applet have a tendancy to flash... as far as I know it's never caused any kind of problem other than the fact that it's a bit annoying... I'm having trouble thinking what winamp and java have in common... other than hardware resources... ideas as to what's actually wrong... not many...
