im debating upgrading, so im wondering, what can i raelly not do with an 800mhz?

well what would you be upgrading to? first make sure your motherboard can handle a higher level processor. cause if you have to spend 200 on a new motherboard and then another 150 on a new processor... thats an extra 200$ and i dont know if you are looking to make that much of an investment. also what are you using your computer for? if its just a utility like for webdesign and irc related things then 800mhz is more than enough. if you use it for gaming then you might wanna think about upgrading, but still 800mhz makes a nice gaming box no matter how you look at it, just depends oh how nice you want it.

yea id be upgrading my mobo and proc. prolly looking at an XP maybe liked 1700 or 1800.

if you dont game then nothing really. you wil not notice any more responsiveness from your OS and programs nor will the speed be used at all other than st the initial startup of applications. If you do game or burn a lot of cds then the upgrade is a welcome adition however i can think of better things to do with 300-500 dollars (try unix again dom, hint hint buy a cheap nix box). even a nicer looking case will afect your experience more if you odnt game.

well if you do upgrade get AMD, unless you have probably reason not to. i am partial to AMD cause its cheaper for what you get and there are no compatibility issues anymore.

if the noise level is very low, stay with it. Upgrading to an Athlon means a larger cooler/van. You would have to use sound insulation, or the noise would eat up the fun you would have with a better CPU.

I have an athlon xp 1800+. Now I'm a gamer, so I needed it, but I do love it.

As for the fan, its not too loud. My box has 5 fans in it (CPU, one front, 2 back, mobo) and its not too loud. So i dunno what you're saying. Not like it's drowning out the music or anything. Just a comfortable whirr in the background. Puts me to sleep at 5 in the morning when I realise the sun's starting to come up.

How much ram do you have? I find that makes the biggest diffrence, but then again I'm a gamer. The OS may not care much.

Um, can you mail the old CPU+mobo to me when ur done? hehe.

I need a third network box to use as a gateway for my network....not to mention as a lanparty server.
