My Computer has gone to hell!
today at about 11am, my computer started to get slow, so i restarted it thinking it was the ram. after it restarted i click on "My Documents" and it takes about 30 seconds to load, so i go to norton systemworks and refregment my whole computer for 4 hours so that all the files can act in harmony. norton is done and now "Internet Explorer", "My Computer", and "My Documents" are all taking 30 seconds to a minute to load. i try uninstalling files which i do not use such as:Windows media player, imesh ,etc.
still the problem prosists. then i go and back up my important files on disks and cd's because i can tell that something bad is happpening. i then download ad-aware hoping it would find some spyware and get rid of it + fix problem but no. after i run ad-aware, my easycd creator 5 platinum informs me that it can no longer "find" my cd burner.
and now i am typing this. does anyone know how i can fix all of this? or at least how i can fix my burner so i can back up some more documents before it completely crashes?

Re: My Computer has gone to hell!
what version of windows do you have? also try ctrl-alt-del and see what applications are taking up your processor power.

Re: My Computer has gone to hell!
im using windows 2000 professional, i havent downloaded anything, i ran norton antivirus, and norton systemworks (both updated every friday), and my "My Documents" folder has approx. 50 files in it. All of the files are either Jpeg's, or Microsoft Word documents.

Re: My Computer has gone to hell!
Good thinking to back up the important stuff, but what important stuff did you back up? virus scan it before you format. also are your virus definition files up to date? there was a virus recently around called "Ikpo" or something, while you are on the net it dedicates all your unused processer power to temporary web servers or something, i am sure someone else will know more about that virus than i do. Anyway, Xeno is on to something, maybe a total format is in order, just make sure you have all your drivers etc before you do

backup all the shit you want, and reinstall your OS, if your cd burner is still missing, remove the ide controls in ur box, and put them back in, is your BIOS seeing the drive?

Don't you just love the fact that the answer to most Windows problems is to format and start again.

Re: My Computer has gone to hell!
did u install anything like daemon tools or nero recently? That has a virtual drive? Look in your device manager and delete all the virtual drives and virtual scsi controls.

Re: My Computer has gone to hell!
You wouldn't happen to be running an HP would you? I had that same problem with my windoze crap. Of course the answer to any windoze problem is to format. You should just get Linux with a good GUI and not worry bout it. Get a manual, and it's not any harder for you to learn than Windows was the first time, I'm sure.

Re: My Computer has gone to hell!
get rambooster from www.download.com to see your processor power when idle. if it says that it is 100% all of the time, more than likely u have got a virus on your hands. sometimes a laggy/old hard drive can mess up on it's cycles and send out some weirdo shit. doesnt quite meet to the symptons tho...but if u have an old comp look into it. sometimes it will make different noises than usual. but this is definitely looking like a virus, and a damn good one too. try to reinstall the driver for your burner and give it another go. this combined with everyone else's comments are all i can think of.

Re: My Computer has gone to hell!
the processor power should always be at 100%, not if youre using a laptop. Why should someone download a program for managing the memory to see if the CPU is idle if you can easily do this with your system monitor? Why should a virus use 100% of the system ressouces? How can you tell anything about the criticality of a virus if you dont know that it is one? Why dont you stop your silly twaddling?
Dont be so naive and expect that Im waiting for answers.
