Not sure..
Ok, so I'm compiling something in linux, i switch to another vterminal and run top to see how much of my resources are being eaten up.
It usualy stays around 0.7% cpu and 40% mem, my question is, what is the limiting factor in this?
Why dosnt it use all the cpu or mem power in order to finish faster?

Re: Not sure..
I believe that you can set gcc to use more or less CPU time. You will find that if you are trying to do ANYTHING while compiling with unlimited use of resources, your whole systems will be worse than a crawl.
I think its default that way so that the average user can compile and still work decently well. Im not sure about what options exactly but I think gcc has the capability to use whatever resources are available.

Re: Not sure..
keep in mind that most hard core developers have a box just for programing and compiling so what cense said would make sense.
