windows 98se was better than xp pro (at least in my experience). xp pro would refuse to start applications, either giving me a "whatever.exe is not a valid win32 application", or it wouldn't do anything. 98 was aggravating with all the "this application has performed an illegal operation" errors, and windows gets all the spyware. in my opinion, windows 2000 was the best windows os.
but i switched to linux, and iv'e been happier with my computers ever since

naw 98 was the best. 2000 sucked because you cant play games on it. if that was resolved then it would have rocked but oh well. its the best for non gaming stuff.

I can play every game ive ever tried to play on 2000. The only thing that happens to me is that my under-cooled Athlon heats up too much and freezes the computer once in a while when ive been playing for too long.

In my opinion 2000 is the best windoze available. XP is really still a young, untested, unpatched OS. Do you see many businesses jumping all over XP? No, and there is a simple reason, its so new and untested, when problems occur, microsoft might not even know about them and support will be shit (not that MS support is good for any other product).

Windows is an odd OS, MS still needs to get the balance between easy of use and total shittiness worked out a little better. Every time something easier comes out, it seems to be shittier and the cause of more headaches than the previous product.

those are my thoughts, curse them if you will.

no thats about accurate except windows 2000. roller coaster tycoon wont even work for my little brother who loves that game. iv even had problems with unreal. 2000 is definitly a bad gaming OS but probably the best laptop OS.

Weird...I haven't run into any problems with playing games on a win2k system. I have had to DL some drivers though, no biggie there.

it varies system to system but the fact stands that the king of gaming is 98SE

Well syphon, there is one situation where I will disagree with the statement about 98se being the king of gaming.

When you are running 2 or more processors. Im pretty damn sure that I could get better preformance 2 processors and win2k than you could get with 1 processor and win98se. The fact that most games use directx and many other windows calls would allow for that load to be distributed across the multiple processors where 98se cannont support them...

of course, this is not much of an argument when attempting to "de-throne" 98se as the king of gaming, which im simply not trying to do anyways... my overall opinion is win2k works well for games in my situation. No problems.

i considered that myself before but name one game that uses SMP. there are none to my knowledge. the only way that might be an atvantage is if you do other things while gaming but since we are talking the king of games and not versatility its a moot point. dont get me wrong win2k is a good OS for a microsft product but its no 98SE.

also i have experienced some madly unstable 2000 set ups and some rock-solid 98 set ups. it has more to do with the hardware than many people consider.

Actually I couldnt get win xp pro to install UT game of the Year edition. Wouldnt even get past the CD autorun screen.

Win98se is what I use cuz Im a gamer, and everyone agrees that its good for gaming and it has the most support and info about how it works.

Weird. I've been able to play ALL of my games on XP. Even the emulators (SNES, N64 and PSX). New and old. They all work fine.

really? thats sweet then. i have to say that ID software comes out with the very best game engines for first person shooters. now that doom 3 is coming out im sure many other games will be using that engine and you can bet its going to support SMP. maybe win2k will become the new king of gaming
