so im downloading this VZ .avi on p2p, and my windows media player won't play it although .avi is supposed to be a supported file type. i get a message telling me "that no combination of filters can be found to render the stream". is the fact that the player labels it is a 'stream' instead of a file something significant? those of you who know who veronica zemanova is will undoubtedly recognize the nobility of any help given, and any help is much appreciated. any thoughts?

update to the newest version of windows media player and it will automatically download the codecs. It might just need a DiVX codec...

the problem is not with downloading it, i've already got all 64 juicy megs of it. i just can't get it to play. there's no dangling subscription in the deal, i got it off of p2p, yanno like gnutella? i've messaged other people that have the same file and nobody else seems to have a problem playing it.

yes i'm on a mission. i also need a relatively easy to use editor that will allow me to split a 1.05gb avi in half and convert it to mpeg so i can burn it to cd.
i've looked at a few, but everything i've found has been $$$$$. and all of the ones i have found so far have been specific about mention mpeg 2. what difference does that make?
just so y'all know, this mission was given to me by a friend in the army, stationed overseas, who doesn't know who chloe jones is. in essence, taking into account his laptop has a windows media player, and i've sent him movies burned on cd before... you'd be doing your country and our servicemen overseas a great favor with your assistance.

Thats the last thing i want to do considering all the secrecy, conspiracy and just plain old stupidity around *everything* the US is doing overseas right now.

Try Adobe Premier. You will have to pirate it if you want it because im sure you wont fork up the cash for it, its not cheap.

mpeg 2 is just your standard video mpeg. Nothing special, every video player should be able to play em.

AVI files store a special index at the very END of the file which is necessary for it to be playable; so if you get an incomplete download of an AVI it will not play properly. If the avi file is encoded in divx, you can use a utility such as divfix to recreate the missing index, and the video will be playable.

Also, Mpeg 2 is what DVDs use, and is seldom used for media distributed over the internet. Windows Media Player will not play mpeg 2 streams unless it has a special codec installed, which microsoft won't give you. I got mine off IRC.

gracias bung, i didn't know that, and it makes sense. according to windows, the error code i get translates into a missing registry key in
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{083863F1-...}\Instance\{D51BD5A5...}
anyway, i was supposed to create the key/value, as it was supposed to be missing according to the error code, but unfortunately it already existed on my system. so i spent half the night fooling around because of an incomplete file. anyway, i compared some similiar files, and it would appear that the one i dl'd is shorter by a bit. makes sense. again, thanks.
cense- i send him burned music all the time, its never been a problem. i think i've seen adobe premier on the p2p i use, i'll try it out. thanks for the advice

There is also DivX 4 & 5, get on the net and go fetch them.
