You need Linux. Windows blows. Why are you paying for something ugly that doesn't work when you could have something great for nothing, and something that actually works!!! Use Linux. That's all there is to it.

I am going to switch from windoz to linux my self but I have been putting it off because I was told that it would take alot of time and work to get it how I want it.

I have been told that linux offers more.

But windoz offers alot (It will do for an few more months yet).

Ok, I've only got a few mins, but here goes:

Why is Windows such crap?

  • Unexplained crashes and reboots.
  • Viruses.
  • Lack of security
  • The way it uses licenses to tie people down.
  • It's totally mental payment system
  • Constant Failure
  • Constant attempts at scaring/bullshitting people into using their software

Generally, Microsoft is that typical 'evil' company that delivers low quality products at high prices, and continues to do so simply because most people know windows, are afraid to change to something new.

Gnu/Linux on the other hand is based on freedom. Total and absolute.

  • Freedom. The gnu licence system means anyone who wants a copy of gnu/linux is able to download or purchase a copy at very little or no cost. This however, is not a requirement of he licence. The licence, put simply, means that you (the owner of the software) has the ability to sell, change, giveaway, destroy the software. The only requirement of this is that everyone you sell/give this software to must be able to do the same.

  • Security. Quite simply, Linux is (as are most *nix based systems) very secure compared to windows. The fundamental file permission set-up means its harder to break into and even harder again for viruses to penetrate.

  • Stability. Thousands of people work together across the net to improve Linux and Linux programs. If someone finds a bug, they can look at the code and then write a patch, which, if successful, will probably be included in the next version.

  • Knowledge. Since the source code is, ands must, be made available, everyone who wants to know anything about the program can find out. Theres no inexplicable crashes, reboots, no unknown little snippets which send your details off to a central database.

  • The Spirit. The general freedom and set up of gnu/Linux has created a *nix community that is hard to find anywhere else. The people involved rarely work for any guaranteed money and instead code, program and develop out of a love or need for creativity and personal expansion. If you need help with an aspect of using or developing a program, another *nix user will, more often than not, go significantly out of his way to help you. The group effort and development of gnu/linux programs means that they are available to anyone and due to the licenses will stay that way forever.

    Live free or die.

Let me see the diffrence between linux and windows in MY case.

-Windows 100% FREE, easy to install and use, practically configurates itself, no problem with drives and devices (at least not me, I don't know for other people).

-Linux 100% FREE, pain in the but to install, configuration is hell (you need to recompile the kernel just te get your soundcard to work!!!!!!!) I like KDE thought. It looks much better that win98,me (but NOT XP). Linux once didn't recognize one of my hard drives ----> a one leged dog was runnig more stable than linux then.

Conclusion: If you can get both OS's for free, I bet most peoples chois' would go to WIN(XP).

Maybe, but windows xp aggravated me to point of going to linux because it kept giving me a "xxxx is not a valid win32 application" error message. It wouldn't even start explorer. Every time i rebooted the computer, i would have to reinstall the programs i wanted to use. And that's just one of the many problems that drove me to linux.

i could see this if i were running ME (the WORST)

i havent encountered any of this... and i payed for my XP. Xenobyte hit the nail on the head for me, those are my problems with linux. fuck rewriting kernals just to run software. almost all of the software i use runs best on XP, and would take lots of time to get to run on linux.

and syphon, didnt you just build a 'doze' machine for your rents? if you couldnt convince them then why try to convince anyone?

I know what you mean. Linux quite often drives me round the bend, ive spent over 15 hours trying to get my mail system to work and i still dont have a clue what im doing wrong, or right. Mind you, on the plus side i do enjoy trying to work these things uit and i'm sure i'll get there in the end. Windows is very easy to use, easy to install, and for most part, its standard, so all programs run on it.

But you totaly overlooked my biggest reason for using linux and not liking windows. Its the spirit. Its the culture. Its the freedom. And it is for those reasons and those reasons alone that windows will never be half as good as linux.

i totally agree with what you say about the freedom. but for me, when it comes down to it, ease of use is the bottom line. i dont want to go around in circles trying to get software to work, when i can do it in minutes with windows. while you may enjoy the challenge, and have the time to play with it, i dont.

microsoft may suck, but its what i know, its what i use at school, where 95% of my classes are on computers, and its what i use at work. when youre taking assignments and projects from one computer to another, to yet another, you need to be able to access them and modify them quickly and efficiently, and windows provides that ability. and if im going to use windows, its going to be XP, or 2000. i got a better deal on XP, so here i am.

this wasnt supposed to turn into a win vs. linux debate, as i mentioned in the opening thread...

I am tired of all the anti-microsoft propaganda going around. The linux zealots hate windows, and the bsd users hate linux. Get a life, windows works fine, it can do pretty much anything linux can do, about 20x easiers, and it's a lot more convienent. The only reason that seems to stay constant is the price factor, but thats why the invented warez.

oh, and as for the linux/windows thing, there's a company working on a distro called Lindows, that'll be able to run windows programs..

yeah i did but keep in mind that they dont even know what a hard drive is. if you know your basics then i can assure you that linux ill work out better. aside from that they needed gaming capabilities.

just as an example of what im working with, last month i went to my fathers office to trouble shoot his computer becasue he couldnt log into an online database. the problem was that he didnt know he had to put a password in the password field. with stupidity like that you deserve to be punished by using windows.

    as for you eth0

windows is in my experience harder to run and setup than linux. with windows xp i had to make install disks, use fdisk to partition, and had quite a few headaches with it not recognizing the cdrom.

with mandrake i droped in a disc and in twenty minuets i was up and running. no fdisk since i had a full gui partitioning program with the distro and no floppy since it actually works when it boot off of the cdrom.

aboout lindows, the beta is out right now for free and the source code will be released soon.
