it would be pointless. i havent ever seen a dailup service that will give you more than 20kbs. consider yourself very lucky for getting 33kbs. also it depends if its a win modem or a real hardware modem. winmodems are usualy pci or built in modems. some times thay can become faster with driver and software upgrades. if its a real modem conected to the serial port then your stuck. either way your lucky to get what you get on dailup.

ADSL is cheap and accessible in most population centers throughout the US; at the same time only about 2.8% of all at home internet users in the US use ADSL. Point: Odds are you can get some kind of DSL service but don't necessarily know it. At prices as low as $10 per month, anyone in a place with DSL service ought to take advantage of the fact but people don't. Personally, I think its proof that AOL decreases people's intelligence. Get DSL, if you don't have access to it stick with dialup cuz ISDN lines are overpriced, charged by the minute, and aren't even the advertised twice as fast for the consumer level ones.

I almost always connect at 44 kbps. Sometimes faster.

It depends more on the copper you're connecting on. Dirty copper means slower speeds. The further away from the proxy you're dialing will also effect your speed.

Yeah, you can get a T1 speed ADSL with a static IP address for $65 a month from earthlink. Apple also owns part of earthlink, so you're giving at least part of your money to people who deserve it. Um, one thing I kinda think is really cool right now is OmniSky wireless on my Palm Vx. Anyone else play around with this? I haven't actually opened the modem up yet,but it works remarkably well and, in conjunction with Pocket C, I've been able to get all kinds of cool utilities to work. Finger, ping, whois, and even a semi not completely sluggish service scan work kind of well with very few changes. Only problem is service isn't great everywhere and battery life could use some improving. Anyone else played around with OmniSky wireless? Its getting cheaper and cheaper, $100 retail for the modem, activation, and the first month of service(unlimited!). Not sure what type of encryption they use so I don't know if they're easy to clone or anything but it might be worth researching. At the least I think its cool and worth playing around with.
