Older monitors when you left them on too long get what is called "phosphorus burn" with when the phosphorus that makes up the colored cells on your monitor stay active on your screen. So by moving images around and the like you could prevent one color from becoming etched into the monitor.
You must realize that the most effective screen saver is one that blanks out the monitor. But i guess many people thought this as boring. So someone got the bright idea of having a light show on your monitor.
Now monitors will hardly ever get phospherous burn so they are mearly a matter of art. And in my opinion some of the screen savers are quite cool.
