Default linux mandrake version

ok im not sure if anyone here thats into nix uses madrake but if so i could use a little help. i have decided that mandrake is the right flavor for me but im not sure what version to get. i think im going with the profesional suite. any thoughts on this decision or maybe recomendations on a better alternative?

the other question is what type of gui should i use. im sure all nix users have their own preference so let me know what you think (and yes im definatly using a gui, ill learn command line latter). at this point im thinking of using kde or gnome. any thoughts?

I dont personally like mandrake, but do what you like in those regards.

I like GNOME much better than KDE. Maybe its the fact that GNOME is so much more configurable or maybe its that KDE reminds me of windows but I dont like KDE.

The first version of Linux I ever used was RH 4.2 and I had a hell of a time I think I was 14 or 15 at the time.... several years later, Im just a bitchy about Linux distros and GUIs as any seasoned unix user

oof. syphon, do what you want but i suggest trying both KDE and GNOME. Then choose.... but GNOME is better

Windowmaker.
Gets the job done with the least amount of extraneous shit.

It's functional, and thats all a gui needs to be.

i have a linux mandrake 8 partition on my HD i mostly us windows. I'd say this is by FAR the easiest linux i have ever installed. Espicially if you want to have two OS on the same physical drive. BTW get your ass some partition magic to make the seperate partition before the install. O yeah make sure you copy down on paper your LiLo set up when installing i fucked this thing up and couldn't get into windows. then i fucked it up some more an couldn't get into linux. bummer

if you have a "winmodem" get on the net and download the drives to windows partition and then install them from the linux partion. using the software installer thingy. this was the only "major" problem i had.

all this said mandrake8 installs about as easily as windows.

if you want to devote ann entire drive to nix then just get removable hard drive bays for like 10 dollars. then there is no lilo issues and your data is safe. the other plus is that if win gets destroyed then you have nix on the other drive to use untill win is up and running.
