cat5 router split ...cable ... somthing. Yea.
OK, i have a netgear router (RO318) ( http://www.netgear.com/product_view.asp?xrp=4&yrp=12&zrp=96 ) and a network (wired within the walls so its hard to work on). I only have one cat5 connection going to my room but i am getting another computer and will need net access. How would i go about setting this up? So far what i have gathered is that i rewire my cat5 to crossover and get a switch to put in my room and use the switch to split my cat5. Would that work? I dont want to have to install any new hardware anywhere except for my room. And i dont mind spending money as long as it isnt too much. Oh and is it better to rewire my cat5 by hand or to get an adapter? (what is the wire order for uplink anyway?)

Don't you have more cat5 cables? Just get another one and hook it up to your router to the new computer.

Doing such a thing would involve drilling another hole in the wall, and passing the wire through over 150 feet of winding halls on two different floors.

Simply buy a switch and plug the existing CAT5 into your router uplink port like we talked about. This is the easiest and simplest thing to do. Besides you also get more ports for later this way.

Re: cat5 router split ...cable ... somthing. Yea.
Here is what I have at home.
Cable comes into cable modem:
------------[]
Modem has a short cable which goes to 8 port switch (My friend has a 4 port hub and that works too):
-[]--|++++++| 2 ports in switch run cat 5 to each comp. |++++++| -------- || ||----Comp 1 | |---------Comp 2
If you can wire that you can do anyhting, share files, share printers, net connection, lan gaming. No router needed. Just make sure you install the NetBEUI and IPX protocols if it isnt working. For some reason my cable company charges extra for a second comp, but they have never discovered either my friend nor I and I dont think they can. I have ZoneAlarm on one of the comps just to be sure. Dunno if that helps tho, maybe just a bit.
Of course I assumed you had windows...
