Building a server
Im wanting to build my own web server and i was just wondering if anybody could give me some ideas on what hardware and casing i should use e.g motherboard, RAM ect....

It all really depends on what you are doing with this server and what kind of connection it has. No point in having all this awesome hardware if no one visits the hosted sites or alternatively if the connection is really crappy.
Without knowing WHAT it will serve to HOW MANY users (at a time) and what CONNECTION it will have, your question is mostly unanswerable.
I run a shitty ass 120Mhz 20Mb RAM on cable as my webserver and it works great because barely anyone visits.

i dont use any special hardware running an FTP server for music, just my old computer, pentium celeron processor, 256mb ram.

i agree jung, an older box is perfect. even what you have is far more than enough. web serving is a very low demand process but servers are high powered because they are doing so much at one. for the average person even a 486 would work with apache. if your getting less than 100 visitors a day then a pentium 133 is the perfect box

well what im wanting to do is to make a LAN and connect it to the net im getting broadband very soon this weekend i hope and then im wanting to host a website and run a wargame on the server. So u think the older the better, but i was wanting to build it from scratch so i know whats in it and for the experiance

i say get a pent 133 and run apache
