Yep. this is one of my favourite films ever, i have it on DvD and just love it.

I totally recommend this film to people who like to think when watching a film, if you just like fun films which don't require you to think then don't watch it. But still do try pleaseeeeeeee.

This is a really unique and original psychological thriller which works very well.

Donnie is just the best character in a film for a long time.

I watched it last nite.... its not really thinkin during the film... more after, when they leave you without an explanation. Which leaves the film open for you to fill in the pieces. I myself dont think there is an actual written explanation, its up to you to make one.
Its a terrific film... make sure you watch it.

The director's commentary, especially during the deleted scenes, explains a lot of the movie. The main reason scenes were deleted was because they were too revealing of the deeper meaning of the movie (think Jesus).

the director and writer Richard Kelly says he has his own meaning of the film, but goes onto say that it isn't the only meaning, people see the film differently hence there are lot's of different explanations, so people can make what they want of it.
Just like David Lynch films.

Id like to what peoples interpertaions are of this story... What is your explanation(s) of the ending? What makes you think this?
And, because i have only seen the actual film, none of the deleted films... would anyone be kind enough to explain to me what the old lady had to do with it? Im guessing the fact that she was a nun, then suddenly wrote that book is probably important?
And why do they go to her house at the end? And why do they break into her basement? And why does she suddenly appear in the road?
Hehe, alot of why's. What a great film.

It was OK. It has the usual holes associated with time travel.

Lysander, what holes?

At the end, Donnie realizes that he must die in order to save all the other's lives. If he dies none of the rest of the movie, after the plane engine landing in his house, happens. So he goes back in time and dies. He's happy about it because he's saving lives, that's why he's laughing.

The old lady writes the explanation of time, which Donnie reads and experiences. She's more important at the end when she stands in the middle of the road, but she's really the one that got Donnie thinking about time travel and all that. She's in the middle of the road at the end because that's what she does. She goes back and forth to the mailbox. Donnie and his dad almost ran over her previously in the movie.

When the teacher, I forget her name, is fired and she's leaving she tells Donnie that "cellar door" is the most beautiful phrase (if anyone knows why, tell me). I think they broke into her cellar just to look around. Either that or Donnie felt compelled to go down there or something.

The teacher says that some famous great linguist(Or howver u say it) said that cellar door is the mots beautiful word.
Jus for the fact that it does sound nice.... say it as in one word "Cellardoor".
Thats what i think anyway. And i guess thats why to me it dosnt seem to pkay any part in the film.

hiya,
i don't usually write on forum's, but i just watched donnie darko for like the 5th time or so... great great movie. check out this website
http://www.tangent-universe.org/time-travel.en.html

it talks about the book "philosophy of time travel"... its a good explanation of the movie almost on its own, but if u haven't seen it DON'T READ THAT!

the movie is great cuz unless u look at other people's comments, u'll think almost anything about the movie. i was convinced my girlfriend was wrong about the time travel and it was just the "light before u die" and that he had the option to live or die after that and everything was all a hallucination or a dream... ccccrrrraaaaazzzzyyyyy!

alright take care all

Does anybody know what Donnie says to the burglar while he's pinned down with a knife to his throat? This scene is near the end of the movie right before Gretchen is accidently run over and killed.I think I hear the word saviour but am missing something else.Another interesting point, after Donnie speeds away in the car with Gretchen's body in the front seat his destination is the lookout where he awoke during the opening scene of the film. Now I know the film's theme is open to discussion but I would like to know how do you think Donnie had the ability to travel faster than the speed of light and therefore travel back in time to,as Gretchen put it"replace all those bad, dark memories with something beautiful"Any precise, thoughtful suggestions would be appreciated.

It wasn't a burgular, it was the kid from school. If you saw the DVD and watched the extra features you see that Frank the Bunny is supposed to be an angel/Jesus/god type figure. That makes me think that God sends Donnie back. Why and how it happens isn't as important as all the things that lead up to it happening and how Frank affected Donnie and all the events. It's really two timelines. In one Frank is there and saves Donnie's life. In the other Frank never existed and Donnie dies. The alternate ending had Donnie "crucified" on a piece of metal.
