Anyone care to venture a guess?

interesting subject, hmmmm.......

well it was golden
it was luminescent
and it was so valuable that two guys were sent to execute the guys holding it.

theories:
#1 Jewelry
everybody who saw it, remarked on it's beauty, but why would such measures be taken over jewelry?

#2 Morphine
hard to get ahold of it in large quantities, it's sometimes stored in glass vials and is golden in color. most of the characters were drug users, and all would have appreciated the sight of so much expensive dope.

#3 Art
possibly some rare stolen piece of art. there is a big market for it, and would explain the comments about beauty.

#4 Mystery
it is fiction and as fiction it does contain things which are improbable or impossible. it could be the idea to simply create mystery and add interest to an otherwise pointless scene created to showcase the "Ezekiel 25:17" speech. (which was a brilliant scene)

these are all that make sense to me. i think #4 is the most likely choice, but i'm not convinced.

From what I hear it is Marcellas Wallace's soul and it was extracted from the back of his head, hence the band-aid there.

yeah i've heard the same thing. i don't really think its true but it's a kinda cool idea. I guess Vincent and Jules are angels hired by Wallaces to get his soul back from the devil. Personally i think satan would have somebody more capable than brett.

The idea of it being Wallace's soul is interesting, and I wouldn't mind researching it, but a soul doesn't really have a street value ("Pumpkin" looked at it like it was a treasure, he probably wouldn't have recognized a soul as something valuable, or even at all). Also, the kids wanted to keep it. They had to have something in mind to do with it. I think the most logical explanation would be gold bars, but I would love to hear more evidence of the soul theory. I've never thought of it that way.

Actually Satan was supposed to be the cab driver chick in the scene where Butch (Willis)'s ass didn't go down in the fifth and he bailed out.

They talked about it in the directors edition, it was a whole long scene that got cut down in length from the original where Butch is talking to her in the cab. I think it might be on the DVD version but I'm not sure.

IT wouldn't be gold bars, that much gold couldn't be carried hy hand. Morphine would be the best guess since jewely is legal and Wallace doesn't seem like the jewel theif type; to big for small time robbery, and not the kind for subtlety. The same for art, I just cant see wallace in that kind of racket.

i had no idea of the directors intentions.... i like the soul thing, now i'm gonna have to go out and get the directors cut. oh well, i don't have it on dvd yet anyway.

I think it was artistic expression. I believe that Tarantino wanted us to imagine what is was in our heads, because that would most perfectly tailor it to our fantasies and personalities.

Tarantino borrowed the idea from some British film. They had the same thing, it went the whole movie with people carrying the briefcase around and never showing you what was inside.

They did that in Ronin, if that's what you're talking about, although it wasn't a british movie. Ronin actually took place in France, for those of you who didn't know that universally known fact.

No not Ronin, an older film like in the late sixties or early seventies, and I am pretty sure Ronin was made after Pulp Fiction. I don't know the name of it, I just remember reading an interview he gave and that is what he said he based it on.

I am not sure what was intended to be in there for the movie. I just know what was actually in there was a joke.

The 'official', at least according to Tarantino, contents of the briefcase were: Nothing. It was just one of those things he put in to keep people wondering, like 'Grace' on the motorcycle.

ive heard both the diamonds like trippy said and the soul thing. i dont have any more to add other than ive heard those two rumors.

I read in an interview with Tarantino somewhere and he said it was a light with a yellow gel. LOL.

Looks to me that the same thing that was in the briefcase was in the Ark of The Covenent (I mean other than the sand) in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" - except there were no Nazis around to melt this time.

Fucking hell i have never looked at that movie like that jesus christ, shit im off to watch it "soul stolen" wtf !
