The Church of the Left
Sometime during the past thirty years, liberalism stopped being a mere political perspective and turned into a religion. I mean that literally. Liberalism now functions for substantial numbers of its adherents as a religion: an encompassing worldview that answers the big questions about life, lends significance to our daily exertions, and provides a rationale for meaningful collective action.
Our whole culture has been trashed by it. People in the '30s '40s and '50s worried about living decent lives and helping each other. Now they worry about money, status and rock hard abs.

Re: The Church of the Left
So too with Conservatism, I think.
For example, Liberals fight public displays of religion on the basis of seperation of church/state in a fervor of almost fanaticism.
On the other side, hard fast Conservatives use the argument that the founders were christians so they must have meant the... That's where there argument gets a little sketchy.
The results are the same. I see a trend to combine religion and politics and it's frightening. Alost reminiscent of Europe in the Dark Ages...

Re: The Church of the Left
Z3m,
I have talked to a lawyer before and asked him where some of our laws came from and he clearly said most of our laws in this country derive from Christian Judaic scripters. example the 7 years (Which i believe is 10 now) of not being able to hold a debt over a person comes from a verse in the old testament of not holding a debt over your brethren for more then 7 years.
I think Christian Judaic beliefs were the foundation of this countries (America) laws.
But we have in fact ammended many of them over the years. and I believe the seperation of church and state is a double edge sword. It not only protects the churchs from the Government but it also protects us from say someone like the Pope who controlled much of Europe during the times we had formed this Nation.
Im not getting religious on you man but you cant say our founding fathers didnt use relgion when they wrote the Constitution.

Re: The Church of the Left
American law is based on British law. No-one could invent an entire system in a few years so took most of the British law, simplified it and used that.
Over the years the two have evolved in differant directions, making them appear differant, but essentially stripped down they are the same.
White witch you were nearly there. Over two thousand years the british law system has evolved from celtic origins. During the romans short but sweet stay here this was intermingled with their system. As the romans embraced christianism their ways became more like the christians. During the middle ages the cathlic church practically ran europe, therefore changing our laws so they could thrive in their evil ways.
Our laws have stayed pretty much unchanged since then and you have adopted ours, therefore making your laws and constitution a direct decendant from the roman cathlic churchs version of the bible.
