Re: Argon Laser
Argon lasers are *safe* lasers that wont take out your eyes (as long as you dont stare at them for TOO long ) They use argon lasers at raves, or anywhere they use lasers...like concerts or something Whatever someone told you about them, like they burn your retina or some shit its a fucking lie. The original lasers they used in warehouse raves back in the late 80s early 90s (red lasers) where quite dangerous if they came in contact with your eyes.(point a laser pointer in your eye and see what i mean ) In the daytime all you would see is a red dot on the wall, but in the night time with enough sweat and smoke (real or artificial...) you could see the patterns it would create. they where later changed to green as a more safer alternative. Though you still see the odd red laser, but its usually orange close to red. www.blm.com.au

Re: Argon Laser
hahah. thanks for the info, i think my friend had it confused with another type of laser or something..he said it was able to melt through concrete and blah blah blah..that dumbass. but if its not an argon laser, whats the laser (if any) thats able to slice through steel and all that?

Re: Argon Laser
Don't be disappointed.
Such lasers exist and even for a long time. Developed during the cold war, laser weapons have been around for about 30 years now.
There are lasers that can melt through very thick layers of *any* material very quickly, more interestingly, there are lasers that can cause cancer on the target in 5 minutes or less without him noticing anything.
These lasers (weapons) use incredible amounts of energy, they have their own energy plants. (Also compact, movable nuclear reactors have been developed for these during the cold war). They don't have visible color like the red or green lasers we know from pointers.

Re: Argon Laser
Uhm, portable nuclear powerplants?
Well perhaps, but the MIRACL uses chemicals to power its laser.. Its a big laser fitted onto a B-52 bomber and it is supposed to shoot intercontinental missiles..

Re: Argon Laser
Any laser *weapon* requires some inconveniently large batteries and capacitors. Light shows are one thing, slicing up an engine block is another.
Anyone out there ever built something errr... damaging?

Re: Argon Laser
a laser could not be colorless or invisible because it is in the visible light spectrum so it must have some color, its important to remember that lasers are light and all the rules that apply to light apply to lasers, for example, if you were to wrap yourself in aluminum foil and and someone tried to cut you in half with a laser, no matter how powerful, it would just reflect off. and there are lasers used in manufacturing to cut wood, but it leaves nasty burns on the wood where you cut it.

How much juice are we talking about? and what exactly powers a deadly laser?

Re: Argon Laser
No clue. I imagine it is enough to prevent them from being portable. If it was *that* easy random kiddies (many on this board heh), would be running around zapping kittens and old ladies.

Re: Argon Laser
Quite wrong, I have to tell you. There's no reason any beam of light has to be on the visible spectrum.

Re: Argon Laser
Right. Normal rules don't always apply for bouncing them, you need special laser mirrors depending on the type used.

Re: Argon Laser
How would a light beam be visible at all ? Only when it gets distorted, say by the air, or dust, or something. This has nothing to do with the wavelengt (spectrum) of the light, other than an infrared laser can't even be seen in dark nebula ;-)
Anyways, I have seen a 1MW Laser Pulse in some institution here, and well, its nice. But not close to being enough for melting your tanks or something.
Then again I must talk about Tesla since this man has understood the principles of resonance. and wavelength. A pulsed laserbeam with the modulation frequency of that of the target atoms, well, if you could do that... maybe not even the atom's frequency but the resonace frequency of the material.
Laser came from Roswell, so whatever it was used there, this might be the first thing humans saw it installed - weapon? navigation? particles?
Anyways, anybody know what the first use of laser was back then ? Was it military (as I heard of) or medical or just useless?
