You'd be better off taking a torch and melting the tracks so they curve outward. Much easier and flawless.

Re: welding wegde shaped chunks of steel to railroad tracks
First off, thats a realllly stupid idea reasons:
1. You could kill the enigineer/passengers (Amtrack)
2. I live next to tracks, a train goes by every 3-6 minutes, no time to do anything you moron.
3. Why the hell would you want to derail a train?!?!!
4. Railroad police carry fully automatic weapons and will hunt you down.
5. For every MINUTE a train is derailed the railroad loses $1,000,000 (Thats one million dollars) Why does this matter? Just think what would happen if they caught you and you owe them 193 Million.
6. Do you know what they have on trains? All sorts of toxic stuff, you don't know whats in those tanks.....
7. YOU ARE JUST STUPID FOR THINKING IT!

Its a dumb idea, only someone working for Al-Queda would do. I like to not be a critic and just throw in my one cent (too cheap to give away two cents). Just stick with destroying your towns plows to make snow days.

Re: welding wegde shaped chunks of steel to railroad tracks
I think its a really bad idea, my father's company sells incredibly hazardous chimicals over the rail, if there's a slight leak the entire surrounding area needs to be evacuated, I can only imagine what would happen if a tank car got destroyed in a train-derailment (I could look it up I suppose). Unless the ramp you welded on was over 5 inches, I think the train would go right over it without incident.

Re: welding wegde shaped chunks of steel to railroad tracks
why weld? all you need is a sledge hammer and you can just bang the tracks apart at the seems, not that they dont have a way of knowing where and when you did that. there are ways around that though.
just dont it on the middle of nowhere, away from people even, otherwise thats just mean.

How big of a fucking sledge hammer do you have? Do you just think the tracks are laid on top of the ties with the ends lined up just right? I think you're seriously underestimating how strong the shit is.

I'm not saying I'm a fan of terrorists, but they ARE smart about stuff like that. They could probably derail a train at least as well as a totse train-derailing crew.

**WARNING LONG DRAWN OUT POST**
I work for Amtrak, and I'd just like to let you know that is conspiracy against the government. Amtrak isn't privately owned. The US Government runs Amtrak. Also, what was said about railroad police carrying automatic weapons is very true. I don't think you know how railroad tracks work also. Tracks make an electrical circuit. If the rails come apart and lose their circuit, the signals automatically transfer to "stop." Also, the territorial dispatcher also receives a notice that the track has 1. been tampered with or 2. being used. If he doesn't have a train on the line where the notice came from, he then calls the proper authorities. Just my 2 cents. -Seige

1. And? 2. Right. you live next to the tracks. And if it wouldn't work there, it can't work anywhere? Cause every track in the world have trains passing by every 3-6 mins? And, can't you weld? That does not even take 1 minute. 3. "Bad ideas" 4. Must be in the US. 5. If they caught me, i would say that "i was trying to cut of that big wedge shaped chunk of metal some idiot welded to the track". They'll give me a medal, right? 6. That's why i won't be around when the train derails. 7. Well......you got a point there. But i got you thinking of it too.

Re: welding wegde shaped chunks of steel to railroad tracks
Cxs trains that sit on the railroad crossings while switching is the only reason I'd mess with with the tracks except for the chemical thing.
Some one in an ambulance died because of that. Waiting for the train to move.

Wait, so if I ran a high voltage stream of electricity through a railroad track (via several car batteries wired togethor), would it make the computers think there is a train comming in one direction? That is non-lethal fun, unless there really is a train comming in another direction. Sounds cool.

Aw, you stole it from GunKid...
As 6C said, welding is a lengthy process, and it has to be carried out in a high visibility area. Most train derailments from WWI on have been done with explosives.

Re: welding wegde shaped chunks of steel to railroad tracks
The wedge idea is pretty stupid, but there are several other ways to do this. You will have to use really thick wire to stop the circut signal from being tripped. 1: Explosives 2: About 30 pounds of thermite (even then im not sure) 3: Get a life, and dont try and derail trains. They weigh hundreds of tons and are moving very fast and whatever you could possibly do wouldn't stop them. (Besides really fucking up the tracks)

They actually weld the tracks together using a mold and high grade thermite. It's cool shit to watch. It doesn't really have much to do with the topic, I just thought I'd throw that in there.

Re: welding wegde shaped chunks of steel to railroad tracks
Welding isn't a lengthy process. It does require some expensive and noisy equipment. If you do it in the middle of the day, you're very likely to get busted. If you do it at night, people will be able to see the arc from pretty far away.

Welders need to be plugged in to power!
You will need to have:
A. Portable generator B. A fucking 4 mile extension lead from your house to the tracks!
or
C. A gas oxy welder setup
LOL Anyway have fun!!!

How about everyone stop posting to say "This is a bad idea you fucking idiot." Read the title of the board. If you came to here to read about good ideas then you're the fucking idiot, right? Wasn't aware simple logic was so tough to understand. I've wondered how much work it would take to derail a train.. too much if you ask me. You'd be better off stealing a car, parking it on the track and video taping it; assuming you could find a curve of track in a secluded area and an easy getaway.

How, exactly, does this work? The most probable way that I can think of is: one rail acts as + and the other as - (or ground). The voltage is measured at both ends of a certain length of tracks. A train will short this out, thus no potential difference between the rails. Ditto for interrupting the circuit (aka blowing up the rails). If it's really that simple...imagine the possibilities! Run a piece of wire from one rail to the other, and you have a train Also, if railroad junctions use the same system, you won't even need the fucking welder for your derailment job. Just place some solid piece of scrap metal between those...how do they call'em...well, the fixed and moving part of track there. It should prevent the tracks from aligning correctly, yet still connect them electrically. Hmmm... [This message has been edited by e-ray (edited 12-16-2002).]

unrelated: bangbangbooty, my post wasn't in reference to the previous post, but to all people flaming. Don't make such quick assumptions or you end up looking like a jackass. CDG, there is no board labeled "Retardism" so there's no need to flame. Bad Ideas is the lowest board in terms of morality so don't worry about it.
