Default Receipt Trick

Does the receipt trick word? The one where you find an old receipt(from the same day and not too old a time)and take it, find the same product then take it up to the till and ask for a refund? I mean, i can see it working but what do you say at the till that will persuade them to refund a packet of untouched gum?

i see no reason why this would not work... except..

a lot of times stores will require seeing your license or id. they track this information in their computer i assume, as they punch it it as you stand there. my guess is that your info will get flagged if they see alot of returns coming from a particular person. even if they dont get down your info, there are only so many people that work in stores and do returns. if everyday you come in and return a few items, they may start to reconize your face...

anyone think of any way of getting around these problems to make this...rather profitable...scam work?

Interesting. Ever read 'Survivor', by any chance?

Anyway, it's a pretty good idea for a scam but there are definately some things you should keep in mind, should you try it out.

Keep away from little Mom and Pop stores. Chances are that they dont get that much business, and would probably remember the face of whoever bought x product. Large chain stores with a lot of traffic and a dozen employees would be a safer bet.

The other thing to think about is the price of said product. I think you could get away with this if you were asking for money back on a pair of 20 headphones, but trying to scam them out of a 3000 Plasma screen TV/DVD combo might arouse suspicion.

And of course, never try it with anything that has a tag attached.

Common sense basically. That's all.

Edit: And for the love of God, dont try and screw over the same store three times in one day. If your going to do it, hit several different stores, then give it a break for a few months. This scam could get some quick money, but it's not much of a career choice.

some stores (a grand total of two that i know of) take a postcode or name when they sell stuff. i assumed it was for marketing, but they might use it to check for fraudulent returns. just a thought.

You face the same risks of doing this as with shoplifting, and if caught, it would be almost the same as shoplifting/theft with fraud added in. The same people that watch for shoplifters also watch for people like you. However, it is a VERY workable scam, and i have seen it done, however without success but the guy did get an "exchange" on the item resulting in a free electric razor. approx 50 dollars in value.

you dont even need a recipt for a refund [ in the u.k]. just go into a blind spot with a playstation 2 mess around the contents (make it look opened). note the time when someone buys one and then go up to the till. i bought this with cash about [insert time here] and they should give you cashback

First off, i worked in a large, fairly widespread drug store awhile back. they were very well informed about refund fraud (its called theft by decpetion, and carries a penalty similar to that of shoplifiting). every cashier there was educated on refund fraud, but seem to hinder the amount of fradulent refunds we would recieve every week. here are some tips:
1) the holidays are a very good time to do something like this. when a store gets very busy you won't be noticed as much.
2) bring in a bag (from the store), to make your story more believable.
3) know the stores refund policy. many stores carry certian items that they guarantee you will like, these items have the most liberal refund policy.
4) use your social engineering skills. no matter how much training a person has recieved they are still a person, and you can use their feelings to manipulate them.

or you could just spare the petty theivery get a fucking job.
