HEXANE
We were doing a lab in chem today, and it involved the use of Hexane (which I think is an organic substance). They told us to make SURE we did NOT dump it down the drain. I checked google, and i found stuff on how to check hexane and what its used for, but not on whats so dangerous about it. how come we can dumb so much other shit down the drain and not this? is it possible to make hexane at home? what is it's structural formula? Thanks.

Re: HEXANE
How ironic you accuse someone for being dumb as result of the color of the hair but misspelled nearly every word of your post...

Re: HEXANE
Hexane is a petroleum distillate. Similar to other petroleum products such as butane, propane, heptane, etc. Pretty much anything with that "ane" suffix on it. As such, it's very flammable and generally not good for you.

Re: HEXANE
Isn't hexane a byproduct made when refining oil? It's probably pretty much like dumping gasoline down the drain.

Re: HEXANE
hexane is C6H14 (or ch3ch2ch2ch2ch2ch3 the long way).
it is flamable, it does boil at 69C and turn into a gas, that could explode if lit, or leak out around the classroom, but i don't see that happening in a drain.
there is no real reason i can think of not flushing it down the drain other than not wanting shit down there. its pretty standard stuff that isn't that special unless you burn it.
