depends on the alarm. some systems have their own power source. an extra 12 volt battery that is also charged by the alternater. they ussually hide the power line so even the owner doesnt know where it is at. the switch is usually at the rear of the hood. so it is almost impossible to stop from going off. best way to stop it is to know its code. you can make signal detectors. im sure the internet is full of plans. but you have to be smart enough to assemble one.

im no expert but i heard if you raise the front of the car it will think its being towed. i think i read it in one of the files here on totse. i also heard if you use a wire hanger and touch both posts of the battery you will short the alarm and will be able to start the car. i never tried either one and dont know if they work or not cuz i dont need to steal cars. but if your just worried about the noise open the hood real quick and cut the horn wire. its really obvious to see and easy to cut. and on old model alarms there is a fuse to disconnect to bypass the ignition kill.

Car alarms 101:

Auto alarm control boxes installed by MECP certified individuals are mounted above whichever wheelwell is closest to the battery, providing a short wiring pathway virtually inaccessible from the bottom of the vehicle. Inside the control unit is a self-powered circuit disconnection device, so even if the wires to the battery are cut, the alarm is still armed and will likely activate. The positive lead usually has a fuse inline, bypassing the fuse box for the car and inaccessible to short from anywhere outside the engine compartment. Each alarm comes with its own, separate horn.

However, it is true that if the car is tilted beyond a 15 degree angle the alarm will shut off, thinking the car is being towed. There is a tiny mercury level inside the control box that provides the cutoff. The problem is that until that level is achieved, the alarm is singing.

Enjoy.
