Barr Chords
You know those chords where you have to press all the string down on one fret? They are called barr chords or am I incorrect?
Do you have any tips or tricks on getting these buggers right so they dont buzz?

Re: Barr Chords
practice. thats all you can really do. the higher up on the neck you do them, the easier it is, until the frets start to get tiny.

Re: Barr Chords
Yes, they're called barre chords.
Just keep practicing, eventually you don't even think about it. Hell, I haven't played an open chord in a year at least.

Re: Barr Chords
Put your fingers right behind the fret. The further back your fingers are, the more they will buzz.

Re: Barr Chords
Yes, I just started guitar and the bar chord my teacher gave me is a bitch. I can't get it right, but I assume it will get better if I practice.

Practice is helping but my fingers are fleshy which makes the chord buzz unless I press hard.

Keep practicing and your fingers will blister, the skin will fall off and get tough. Then you'll continuously make a loud "shlippf" noise everytime you change frets.

Re: Barr Chords
It also helps to think of them not as "big bad scary barre chords", but as just any chords you want.
for example, 46654x <-- you could barre that, or you could just play 4665xx, no barring involved.

Are you left? Because if you are, get a left-handed guitar, playing a right-handed guitar won't help at all. But just have your 1st finger (index) over all of the strings on fret 3 and you can get the 5's in two ways: use fingers 2, 3, and 4 (middle, ring, pinkie) and press on the 5th fret for those or use your 3rd finger (ring) and press it down on the 5 frets. The second way may be harder at first, but after practice, it'll get better.

Re: Barr Chords
It helps to have big, strong hands (or just strong hands, depends on the neck of the guitar). Make sure you put your thumb directly under the neck, or the best place for you to get leverage. you might also be able to wrap your hand around the neck, depending on the neck size, hand strength and the chord. when your thumb is under the neck, you probably want the fleshy part pushing on the neck, it hurts my wrist sometimes to use the tip.
hope this helps
oh, if you want to learn a song with bar chords, try stairway to heaven. it isn't all that hard, and you can show up the losers who play greenday and blink 182 crap.

Re: Barr Chords
Watch a classical player play.
Rock players have a tendency to put their hands in the most horrid positions..
I learned on classical, and my muscles never get tired or anything like that, its all in the position.

Re: Barr Chords
1 warning...do NOT lock your shoulder or any part of your body when preforming hard tasks... You'll grow into it and you'll be fucked for a LONG time. Just sit, in a proper position and do not tense up.
it's hard, but you'll get it
wait till you try to play steve VaiESQUE leads...FUN! but...really...it actually is

Re: Barr Chords
Vai stuff is always fun to play, although I like real shred kinda music more, gives me more freedom Nothing better than getting up on a stage and playing a paganini song...followed by a buckethead song, and it all making sense.
