Just play alot. The more you play, the better you get. Practice makes perfect .

Re: Drumming
rudiments are the basic skills and beats you'll need to play more advanced things. You'll most definitally want to practive those. They are the building blocks for everything.

Re: Drumming
Rudiments are usually very important. Basic exercises like playing sixteenth notes to a metronome are vastly important to becoming a good drummer. Rudiments will improve your capacity to keep a steady beat; I hear drummers that cant keep a steady beat way too often.
There are many very common rudiments; I would recommend buying a metronome if you dont already have one. Practice keeping very steady sixteenth notes to the metronome beat. Put a slight accent on the first not of every set. (For the rest of my suggestion L=left hand; R=right hand.) The paradiddle, when even at a high speed is impressive in itself: LRLL, RLRR, LRLL, ect. (The strokes are done in 16th notes.)
Remember: keeping the notes stead is more important than speed; speed comes with practice.
There are many rudiments for the set as well. (Search for them at Google.)
What does your 5piece consist of? 2 toms and 1 cymbol?

Re: Drumming
5-piece is propably base, snare 2 hi and 1 lo tom. if you want to get better I reccomend using plastic (7A) sticks, and experiment with wisks and other sticks. try riding the hi-hat. --- ---

Re: Drumming
I disagree, (wisks have a very distinct sound.) buying neat-o sticks won't make you a good drummer (practice.) With my vast knowledge of all things percussion, ::coughs:: I'd recommend just getting a pair of Vic Firths (you can probably experiment in the shop, I prefer thinner sticks, just dick around with a thick pair and thin pair before buying them and see which you like.) (And there are several common 5-piece drum set types, that's why I asked.) [This message has been edited by Sagewisher1 (edited 12-20-2002).]

Re: Drumming
I want this drum set: http://www.drumcentral.com/drumsetpics220.htm more expensive than my car also if you want to get better just tap your fingers to any music in your head. or use your sticks and drum on books. it took me almost a month to learn to drumroll, but using a hard-cover book helped --- ---
