Aphex Twin is always good - and if you can download the video Window Licker - one of the best videos ever.

First grab Kazaa Lite if you don't have it. http://www.kazaalite.com

Don't worry about the genre differences. Genre classifications are fickle and usually arbitrary, but in general I would avoid anything labeled trance. :P

Download stuff by:

Roni Size
DJ Krust
Dieselboy
Scooter
Daft Punk
Basement Jaxx
Prodigy
Crystal Method
Richard Humpty Vission
Atari Teenage Riot
Thievery Corporation
Aphex Twin
Fatboy Slim

That should give you a good sampler...

BTW, drum n bass/jungle is the best genre

Richard D. James is fucking awesome!

So is Coil. Coil is the group that Richard D. James (the many names of Rishard: Aphex twin, Caustic Window, AFX, etc.) But Coil stuff is usually pretty hard to find, and when you do find it (in America) it usually costs a lot of money because they're imports. Still good stuff.

Dune owns for techno/rave, they are one of my favorite techno bands. Also try George Acosta, his new ablum Awake is very good.
As for techno/trance try The German Trance Alliance, they are pretty reliable for good music, some of it's over done but still good.

good techno? well... techno is good but its not all that varied, its really when you get into the offshoots and weird splintergroups that it gets interesting.

for example: electro, electroclash, house, dark house, gabba, hardcore and all the other names for the progression of techno style music. drum n bass and jungle are in a whole new genre of their own and well worth looking into.

good techno stuff:
bolz bolz - take a walk
ritchie hawtin
aphex twin
scan 7
aux 88
dj assault
dessert storm
alec empire
squarepusher
plasticman
radioactiveman
golden boy

look out for stuff on the tresor label, its usually pretty good.

Hi!
sorry i'm a bit late but still ready to help.
Most of the stuff you should check out first is already mentioned. If you want to get a picture what different genres of techno music are listen to some of these CDs.

Ambient:
Various Artists "Chillout guide" (Ministry of sound;2001)

Breakbeat:
DJ Hyper Bedrock Breaks (Bedrock;2002)

Drumandbass, jungle:
Goldie
Platinum Breakz (any) (Metalheadz) acctually anything from Metalheadz or good looking records
LTJ Bukem
If you like good lyrics try also The Streets but its UK-Garage though

Triphop:
Massive Attack
Thievery corporation
DJ Krush

House:
John Creamer and Stephane K. (progressive)
Bad Boy Bill (Chicago)
Felix da Housecat (Chicago)
Richie Hawtin (Detroit)
"Global Underground" evry time very good compilations with best house and trance DJs

Hardcore, Gabber:
"Atari Teenage Riot"
"Alec Empire" are the best part of hardcore normally it's a very fast and loud noise. Gabber is even faster about 200bpm.

Can't really say what it is but if you like Aphex Twin try also Autechre and Two Lone Swordsmen. All of them sound great but i can imagine that for a person who hasn't listened to techno before they may seem a bit strange so try to listen first to some goooooooooooooood, "normal" stuff like
Leftfield
Orbital
Underworld
Chemical Brothers
The PRODIGY
I mean it's just MUSIC but made mostly on computer.

"Drugs are changing, music is changing, you can't sit all your life in this room stoned and listen to Iggy Pop" or something like that said Diane to Renton so try to move on to something so new and exciting like techno music. I found it for myself wish you the same.
And keep away from Eurotrash like Scooter or anything what they show on mtv. Commercial techno stuff is just disgusting.
Acctually it's the same with fans everywhere
i mean everybody thinks that HIS music is the best, me too.
If you want to take a glimpse at life and love translated in techno check out "Human Traffic". Very, very good drug movie also.
OK i'm done for today hope you are serious about it

im surprised no one has mentioned the best djs in the world. people like paul oakenfold, paul van dyke, john digweed, sasha, tiesto, blank and jones, timo maas. they are the world best dj's, producing the worlds best techno. anything under the label of gatecrasher or (older stuff, their new stuff is plain softcore shit) the ministry of sound will pretty well gaurantee good music. or most things that pete tong puts his name to.

people have been neglecting the most popular section of techno. some people argue that trance is not a sub of techno. i say it is.

sorry RAOVQ, but the only people who play electronic music in a club environment that i would rate are the people who do actual live sets i.e. bring a sampler, 808 (or equivalent), computer and actually make up the tunes live. i just don't see how someone can gain recognition for putting other peoples records on. i mean sure they can beatmix or do snyde effects like backspins or other cheezy things. i haven't heard a comercial D.J. in the last 4 years that has done anything even remotelly new or special. i've been to many good nights when their has been a D.J. on but the best ones are when they are accompanied by someone doing something live. i have many freinds who can D.J. better than anyone on the ministry of sound, but they can also do live sets. beatmixing well isn't that difficult and once you've mastered that its all down to whoever elses's music you put on. The fact that these big name D.J.'s get all the money and the people who are actually wirtting and makeing the music get virtually nothing.
