Re: bass guitar
If its your first, go with a Squier P-Bass. They're actually pretty good and they're really well priced.

Re: bass guitar
i disagree. you get less for your money with fender than any other brand. im not into peavy much but i can tell you the best brand for a starter bass is probably yahmaha. you get more for your money with them than any other major manufacturer. what exactly do you want to spend? and do you have a preference as to it being new or used? same with neck length, number of frets, or number of octaves covered on a neck?
my suggestion is get a yahmaha or ibanez

Re: bass guitar
Well for starters I'd suggest a 4-string, passive model, preferably a jazz bass. If you want something sturdy to train, play and perform with for a good price get an OLP. Although they're replicas their quality is really solid and no review I've read so far discredited them as junk. If you wanna spend a bit more get a nice Warwick model.
Peace out, Lord Shadowcaster

Re: bass guitar
yeah yamahas are great reasonably priced basses, expect to pay a bit more for an ibanez though. Avoid squiers at all costs, they are the same as samicks and casinos but they are double the price

Re: bass guitar
i myself don't play bass, but when i bought my first guitar i bought a yamaha. i fucking hated that guitar and regret buying it. i bought a new guitar in a month, and broke that motherfucking yamaha in half (they break easy too). id suggest if u think ur gonna play for a while, get a good bass. id go with an ibanez, they've never let me down with quality.

Re: bass guitar
I would definantly say an ESP ltd. B-50, it is an excellent starter base, it sounds great and is pretty cheap too. I also like the dual pick-ups, the quality, and the over-all setup of the bass
