The closest you can get is when "Punk" magazine started print and covered the new music scene of the time... Which later became known as punk music.

i think the first punk band was the rammones, then malcom maclaren formed the band of idiots know as the sex pistols just after.

That's a tricky question. A lot of people would say the Velvet Underground in the US. Really the first consummation of punk was probably the Sex Pistols though.

Well this is a long answer and every one argues about it anyhow. Well punk evolved from Uk dance hall reggae and us garage rock . The first "punk" bands were The Velvet Undergriund, The Stooges , The New York Dolls, and a slew of others I am forgetting. Then came The Ramones and thats were Malcolm decided he could get rich and got a couple of "punks" and slapped them together and viola mayhem . Anyways then UK Oi soon followed and its a whole nother ballgame . Yeah thats somewhat of it . So in closing no one band in my opinion started punk . It was just a progression of sound style and what some people needed to hear .

Actually, Oi was being played as early as 75 in bars by skinheads and had no assosciation with punk music til a few years later when ska and skinhead culture in general started to become assosciated with it. It also wasn't the Ramones that got McLaren into it. It was the New York Dolls, the first band he managed, and Richard Hell. The whole image he sold in england was based on a mix between Richard Hell and Johny Lydon. Dirty, ripped dark clothing and messy, spiked, and dyed hair.

If you take that back a step, Iggy said that he was really influenced by Jim Morrison, and I guess you could call Morrrison the grandfather of punk ;-)

There were plenty of punk bands in the early to mid 60s. They didn't sound much like punk bands of now, or of 20 years ago, however, thats mainly just different technology.

Actually, Meta, whats funny about that is that legend (hah!) has it that Jim Morrison was heavily influenced by the Velvet Underground. Supposedly, he saw them on tour in like 66 when they played in San Francisco and was intrigued by their performance and style. It's believed thats where he got the idea of wearing leather pants and doing weird shit on stage.

Although i have no idea where punk started. Sex Pistols, Ramones, Velvet Underground, England, USA. I would like to say that i like England's First (The Sex Pistol) much better than the first american punk bands. Velvet Underground and Ramones just aint my thing.

i have seen this several times moderating for the monthes that i have and the only answer i can give is that there is no solid answer. to answer your question you have to name the first punk band. thats impossible since music is by nature opinionated and loosly defined. what i think was the first punk band may be just another rock band to you. i think the closest we can get is that it was started mainly by white males in the US and England. even giving a tiem is too fact oriented to be correct. its all in the mind of the beholder. whatever you think it started is where it started for you

A better title for this thread would have been, "WHY THE FUCK DID PUNK START". Die punk rock, die.

It was the Ramones that the Punk movement. I watched a show on punk music about 6 months ago. The Sex Pistols were doing their thing around the same time as the Ramones, but they hit their high point after Ramones made a name for Punk.

Punk? No band started punk, punk was a name given to kids from the streets by the british police that were considered trash.

Trash means Punk.

Ok. Punk was a music movement, if you will. I think you could trace punk roots back into the sixties. But I think it really came alive in the 70's. Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Talking Heads and Blondie and many more. I think its really hard to try to nail down when it really started out and by who.

The UK'S first punk single was "The Damned - new rose".
