Social Classes
I friggin' hate people identifing me by the music I listen to. Are people today really that shallow? I refuse to be called a freak, prep, wigger or any of those other bullshit names which are intended to classify me. Does anyone else feel this way? It seems no one can understand how stupid this is but me...

Are you an elitist? No one but you, eh?
Sounds like the people that are "labeling" you.
If you hate it so much, why do you listen?

Re: Social Classes
i think that the type of music that someone likes says alot about them. i think that if someone actually really likes a type of music or an artist, not just pretends to like it for whatever reason, then it must connect with the person on a few levels, and it will tell you alot about the persons thoughts, hopes and what they value.
but id say that 99% of people that listen to rap are bullshit posers that this world could be without.

You are not a bull-shit poser. You listen to rap. Just because rap is popular doesn't mean that if you listen to it you are a bullshit poser. Just listen to what you want to and do want you want to and screw that social class shit.

I'm sure if someone said "99% of people who are poor are wasters that this world could be without", or "99% of Afghans are terrorist who should be shot", you would be the first to bombard them with rhetoric and accuse them of ignorance

Re: Social Classes
realize that basically almost everything on MTV or tv for that matter is bullshit. sum41, nelly, blink182, jayz, briteny spears, nsync all have been filtered so many times you could shit on it and it still would be clean. stick to underground hip-hop and underground rock, punk, blues, jazz and it is much better than anything on tv. the only band on tv that still deserves props is tool. and radiohead.

That's pretty ignorant there. Most music on MTV is a joke and product, and you know what? All rap isn't MTV crap. Spearhead De La Soul Tribe Called Quest dead prez The Coup The Roots Most old school rap like Public Enemy Pharcyde Jurassic 5 Mos Def for example.. You people can't be totally ignorant of all rap besides the stuff on MTV and say that it's all fake crap. That's like saying that all punk rock is fake happy pop tunes based on what you've seen on TV.

Re: Social Classes
im sorry, but this time i agree with syphon. most rap is poser bull shit. most of these white kids i see drivin new hondas with loud ass mufflers and silly super fins dont know shit about the ghetto, or the culture that the music they listen to is aimed at. now rap artists (i can hardly believe i said that) arent even targeting that ghetto audience, theyre targeting rich suburban white kids. pathetic, truly.
i did say most, so as not to severly offend anyone, but then again, what the fuck do i care if some bullshit poser thinks that im an asshole? and oh yeah, your honda, the one with the 15 inch speakers and the trunk that rattles, it sounds like shit too. fix your muffler.

Re: Social Classes
Why do retards say things like 99% of kids that listen to rap are posers. These people have only heard a fraction of the rap thats out there because thats whats getting played. The whole underground hip hop culture is extremely esoteric, which is why these people probably won't even get a chance at expanding their horizons.

Re: Social Classes
Any MTV music is the polished and marketed tip of the iceburg of the real stuff. Mass marketed hip hop and r&b is just polished up commercialized stuff to make money, just like MTV punk and rock is. Many people who are really into hip hop know that there is a lot of good stuff out there that isn't mass marketed all over TV commercials. There are a lot of different hip hop styles and intelligent, talented hip hop artists that blow that nu-metal crap people listen to out of the water. I don't see Limp Bizkit or Slipknot doing anything substantial, or those whiny alternarockers pushing any boundries. When I'm not listening to punk, I like to listen to the Coup, Spearhead or Paris rap about social and political issues instead of some boys yelling about the "nookie".

Re: Social Classes
I think that it is stereotyping to say that anyone who listens to rap is a stupid poseur who wants to be black. I can't say that I enjoy rap music, but some of those titles have really cool beats to them. They sound good when they rhyme. I don't believe that it takes a great amount of talent, compared to other types of music, but it's not all bad. Playing a harp in an orchestra would probably take a lot more talent than finding a few words that fit together in a rhyming fashion. I believe it's immature and ignorant of rap listeners to put down things like country and classical just because they don't enjoy the music. They are too childish to understand the talent and practice that are involved in these music genres. BTW, I can't say I know anybody who listens to any kind of rap music that I haven't heard of on MTV or VH1. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that it's bad to like the music on MTV, but if you only like it because it's popular, then you aren't going to get very far in life, letting other people make up your mind.
Think about it...

Re: Social Classes
you may all be correct about undrerground shit, but anyone who believes that the majority or rap isnt MADE for mtv is blind. most rappers talking about $$$ isnt a coincidence. people who keep trying to apply the underground or the exception to the majority are only perpetuating an argument that is barely worth having.

Re: Social Classes
No. I'll have to disagree. Most of the rap you have heard is made for MTV. You'd be surprised how much rap isn't even allowed on MTV because it's too subversive and political, even if it sounds really good. Most of the rap (and all other music) on MTV sounds fake because that's the only thing that MTV will play. If I judged punk by what I saw on MTV I'd hate punk. Actually if I judged ANY style of music based on what I see on MTV I'd hate music and read a book in silence.
Hip hop began as a music style for black people to voice their opinions and concerns, or dance to. A lot of it had very strong political content and messages, with different styles. In the 90's, MTV simply picked up a few rappers that were less politically threatening and more mass marketable and crappy and then kept marketing clones of one another. Different styles of hip hop are still around, you just don't hear them as much as puff daddy crap, or even at all. Also, some people do just like stuff to dance to.

Re: Social Classes
im sorry, i dont watch mtv. im basing my comments on people that i know that listen to rap and the rap that they listen to. i dont know what they play on mtv or the radio or anywhere else. you want to prove me wrong you go ahead and make a list of rappers that arent talkin about $$$, then ill counter with a list double that of yours with rappers that are.
sayin that most rap that isnt on tv because it is political is stupid. its not on tv because its offensive and obscene. if i wanted to hear some dood talk about hos and $$ and cars id go to a redneck strip joint.
the fact is undeniable that the largest hip hop/rap stars out there are talkin about money, guns, hos, and cars, not politics. bling fuckin bling, thats real political.

Re: Social Classes
LOJIQUE - christian hip-hop. very good beats but the lyrics BLOW.
'ol dirty bastard - he's just ..... I don't have any words for this dude but I like his music for some insaine, unknown reason.
LPG - They have some pretty good beats and lyrics
Aesop rock - not to bad either.
Now what I find remarkabel is that most of the good hip-hop artists are white (except that idiot slim shady). The white hip-hop artistis take this shit seriously while the balck artists (who started the whole genre) practically whipe their ass with hip-hop.

Paris Mos Def Common Coup Spearhead Pharcyde Tribe Called Quest De La Soul Fugees Roots Blackalicious Rakim MC Solaar Handsome Boy Modeling School Jurassic 5 dead prez Dr. Octagon The Automator Deltron 3030 DJ Shadow Digable Planets Thievery Corporation Del the Funky Homosapien DJ Revolution Black Eyed Peas Hieroglyphics Souls of Mischief Black Star Hi Tek Dilated Peoples Public Enemy KRS-One That's to begin with.. there's also a slew of foreign MC's from Europe and stuff that I am not going to take the time to look up through tons of catalogs to list for you. Remember, in all styles of music you'll get a ton of posers and people cashing in. I'm sure anyone that listens to metal would laugh if someone tried to say that metal/rock fans are wannabe fake angst posers because of Limp Bizkit. You could counter any list of good artists with a list of posers. What does that prove? NOTHING besides that every style of music has it's posers and talented people. After every good metal band you get a Poison. After every good punk band you get a Blink 182. After every good MC you get a Puff Daddy. After every good rock band you get a Limp Bizkit. After every good indie band you get 50 million whiny wannabe clones. That's how the music industry is. quote: Now what I find remarkabel is that most of the good hip-hop artists are white (except that idiot slim shady). Re: Social Classes
but the artists you list, while they may not be on the gangster style tip, are not the majority, nor the mainstream. when you refer to them as the mainstream you are almost doing them a disservice by classifying them with other rappers like
jay z puff daddy dmx wu tang cash money master p
and all of their respective cliques who do make up the majority of rap album sales, and who do have silly gangster poser fans. i mean shit, i didnt even touch on any of the west coast or 'dirty south' rappers, and if i went and listed all the rappers in each of the cliques above my list would be close to if not longer than yours. im not denying that rappers like the ones you mention exist, and i havent labeled the whole hip hop community, but i have stated; and will continually state; that the mainstream is posers and fools, and is intended to be that way. and i dont know shit about this 'nu metal' crap either, but im sure it sucks as well.

It's ironic how the genuine and real music is the least popular. Maybe once a singer gets famous they are forced to be fake in order to make the money.
