Best drummers.
Tell me from the 1970's through now, who do you think some of the best drummers have been? They don't have to be just rock drummers either. 1) Alex Van Halen 2) Gene Kupra 3) John Bonham 4) Charlie Watts 5) Tommy Aldridge

Re: Best drummers.
1. Max Roach - liberated the jazz drummer from the usual stifling roles (just keeping the beat and occasionally laying down a solo while the rest of the band has a cigarette). He did a whole song, solo, on nothing but a hi-hat, people!
2. Pete Thomas - from the Attractions (Elvis Costello and). Gets my vote for most solid.
3. Evelyn Glennie - I know this is the wrong forum, but she's mostly deaf, yet making a living as an insanely incredible classical percussionist, working with every big name in the classical world and with Bjork and a whole mess of other brilliant musicians.

Re: Best drummers.
Danny Carey, 9 over 8 over 7...? damn good... my goal in life is to make a song where a 23 over 28 over 33 sounds good. kudos to whomever knows why.

Re: Best drummers.
How about Buddy Rich? I heard him play (on a tape) in 1945 at the Phily Philharmonic. He had a drum war with another great drummer Gene Krupa. Man it was fantastic! You could hear these guys litterally playing one handed. They could play one handed faster than I can with one hand. By the way they played big band jazz.
Harpo, LOL trying to pull it off.

Re: Best drummers.
dave grohl wasnt fast... but he was good in the way he laid down exactly what the music called for. in the same way danny carey does for tool's extravegant musicianship.
i think the real skill in drumming is knowing what will sound good for the music as a whole.
