The Carb
I recently bought a nice lil' glass piece, and I have a question... Just what does a carb do? I've always smoked J's or blunts; I'm not a big pipe kinda guy...

Re: The Carb
It has something to do with how it is cleared. I know that on a water bong, if you don't release the carb just before you finish hitting it the whole thing will stiff be filled with smoke so u have to clear it. So when hitting it, let go of the carb just before you finish hitting it. Like I said I'm not too sure but this is how I think it works for experience.

Re: The Carb
On a small pipe its probably more for getting some fresh air into your hits. But AC is right about using it to clear the chamber on a bong.

Re: The Carb
i never end up using the carb on a small piece.
and i always forget it once i get really high...
it's kinda pointless on a small piece... it's not like the air is cool because it's going through the hot piece...

Re: The Carb
you hold the carb shut, suck, put the flame near the weed, the weed will light, suck with the carb still being held shut, then near the end of your hit let go to get the smoke thats in the pipe into ur lungs.
and CRazyamishman said "i never end up using the carb on a small piece."
if you dont hold the carb shut at all, you wont be sucking in as much smoke. you will be sucking in air and smoke, resulting in small hits and wasting weed. when me and my friends are high and still smokin, sometimes we forget to hold the carb shut and i am usually the one to tell someone else to cover it shut.

Re: The Carb
More than any other thread that I can remember in the recent past, this one really makes me wonder about the generation that follows [mine]. Out of al those replies and it was only the last one that fully and accurately answered the question. Come on, folks! You smoke weed, but you don't know what a carb is for? Worse, is that you weren't able to figure it out; and it should be bloody obvious! Either you all've smoked too much weed already... Either that or you shouldn't be smoking it at all!

Re: The Carb
quote: if you dont hold the carb shut at all, you wont be sucking in as much smoke. you will be sucking in air and smoke
i never explain myself enough. [let us take into consideration that the carb is used to take in air while hitting a smokey piece, or to clear a larger piece. - this is what a carb is "used for" now that we have that down- "using a carb" would be hitting the piece and either letting go of the carb so you can breathe or to clear the piece. so when i said: "i never end up using the carb on a small piece."what i meant was: "i never end up using the carb on a small piece as it was designed to be used: to clear the piece."hence, i am not an imbecile and suck on a piece like a vacuum just to get a bit high.] meta- we've proven it [and we'll try hard to keep you on edge.]: you have reason to worry.

Re: The Carb
Do you people fail to understand even the most rudimentary principles of airflow?
Fill a straw with liquid. Plug the bottom with your finger. Suck on it.
Now, do it again, only this time remove your finger as you start sucking. Easier, huh? And the straw emptied faster?
Go look at a "steamroller" pipe. They're essentially one large carb. Same thing as the POS toilet-paper-tube/foil shit-pipe you can make at home.

Re: The Carb
the thing aboutthe carb is, than on a small pipe its role is less than that of a water pipe.when ripping a bong if u dont let the carb go/pull the stem, you leave "stale" smoke. with a small pipe, the carb does the same thing except if you pass a pipe with smoke in it, nobody says anything, but a bong that hasent been properly carbed is a bid deal...its all ediquite(sp?)the carb also helps you get the shotgun effect of a steam roller...little air...flow little air flow....lots of air flow...i dunno...just my thoughts
