Re: absinthe oil
absinthe oil? gotta link to this?
absinthe is a drink made with wormwood and alcohol... its quite strange, but you have to make it correctly to really get the effect of the thujone.

Re: absinthe oil
from what i've read, it isn't horribly interesting, but always worth a go. i'd like to get ahold of some just to be able to say i've got experience in every non-alkaloid psychotropic, that would be, uh, neat.

That's stretching a pun a tad bit, though a good all round effort. As unofficial TOTSE judge dela puns, I give it a slight ' Boo-[a Boo for those not into puns, is a good thing - the more you make people groan and say 'boo', the better the pun usually was. Re: absinthe oil
i have no idea what they are selling as absinthe oil... they dont even say what it is. however, its much cheaper to just order some wormwood and make your own absinthe with some high proof vodka.

Re: absinthe oil
Just so yall aren't misinformed. Absinthe is much more than just a high proof alcohol and wormwood. Generally its a distilled maceration of wormwood, hyssop, anise/star anise, fennel, mint, and alcohol. Anise is a big ingredient that people seem to forget, its a big part of the flavor. There are also other things, some people like putting ginger in theres, its pretty good. People seem to forget that its not just a drug, its a drink, and although you may get some effect from the thujone, its not really worth drinking badly prepared absinthe.
Ok, because I really like absinthe, I'll list some more popular ingredients, and my opinions on them. I'm sure you don't care, but I'd like to type a little extra.
coriander seeds: These are really good, and add an excellent peppery flavor.
mint: Often used in the coloring process, but, although it doesn't add any true mint flavor, you can tell its there. I don't like too much mint in mine, because it has a tendency to make the think taste like listerine.
citrus fruits: sometimes the peels from things like oranges, lemons and limes are added. The flavor is barely noticable. I'd say orange and lime are the best, lemons don't really balance out with the rest of the flavors.
Of course, generally absinthe tastes very similiar to shit (well, how I'd imagine shit tastes). However, its its prepared properly (even the bottled stuff isn't really), although its just as bitter, the flavors are more apparent, and you can actually enjoy drinking it. Of course, with most liquors, its one of those "acquired taste" things.

Re: absinthe oil
how do you go about distilling yours djsam? ive never been fond of the "soak for 2 weeks" methods.
i got my favorite recipe from a guy running an absinthe bar a Burning Man back in 1999.
One ounce dried chopped wormwood One tablespoon angelica root One teaspoon hyssop One half teaspoon coriander seeds One quarter teaspoon caraway seeds One pinch cardomon pods One tablespoon fennel or anise seeds 750 ml. 100 proof vodka

Mod: You should get rid of Twerpsie's link: LTK. That's a research chem vendor.

Re: absinthe oil
Junglist, sadly enough, i don't have my own still, but a friend of mine does. quote: One ounce dried chopped wormwood One tablespoon angelica root One teaspoon hyssop One half teaspoon coriander seeds One quarter teaspoon caraway seeds One pinch cardomon pods One tablespoon fennel or anise seeds 750 ml. 100 proof vodka
I think that you might find that goes well served with orange juice, and small amount of orange zest for flavoring (after its distilled). Changes the bitter flavor to more of a spicy orangish thing.

Re: absinthe oil
i dont have a way to distill though, im not about to set up a still in my apartment. especially for a few pints of absinthe that i may make twice a year. maybe if i got bored enough i could come up with something small scale... even using my stove? who knows... i was hoping you had some ingenious new method, although i knew it not likely. (not a personal thing against you, just common sense)

Re: absinthe oil
Is thujone active by itself? I thought it had to be taken with alcohol to get worthwhile effects. If so i might try a thujone extraction.

Re: absinthe oil
The only distilling I've done has been in a lab setting, but I could easily make one at home in about an hour. All I'd need is tubing and something to measure the heat of the steam. The stove will heat and the water from the sink will cool.
