Better Living Through Chemistry Discussions of any and all sorts of mind-warping chemicals, pills, booze, mind machines, trippy stuff, making beer, current street prices, importing pharmaceuticals, smart drugs, nutrients, herbs, and altered states. Please try to keep your conversations "theoretical" in nature, since this is an open conference.

Default What's the chemical made with these elements?

I'm looking for sodium hypochlorite, but photography stores don't seem to know what I'm talking about. Is this what photo stores usually have?

"NaClO3"

Curious

Sodium Hypochlorite is NaOCl.

Where did you get NaClO3?

And if you really want to get sodium hypochlorite, I'll tell you. You've got to promise to keep this under your hat; we don't want just anyone to get ahold of the stuff, right?

Ok, ready????

Well, go to your local grocery store....

Go to the isle with all of the cleaning products....

Look for some big plastic bottles, usually they are white...

Now, you can't miss it. Look for the word "Bleach" on the bottle.

Sodium Hypochlorite is bleach [Much the same way that NaOH is lye].

So, what's the big need for bleach?

Supposedly you can get pure bleaching powder, I've never seen it I've also never needed it. You can buy hypochlorite at pool stores too as a powder, Lithium and Sodium hypochlorite.

Wow! The things you learn around here! I'm no chemist... I was looking for the standard photography chemical, but apparently the photo stores don't make it so standard. Now all you people have me wondering why my friend is wanting it :-( Hmmmmm...
