question for all you kitchen chemists
can somebody tell me how to know when a powder has been completely disolved into a liquid? reason i'm asking is because i plan to disolve 1000mg of amt(alpha-methyltryptamine) freebase into 195 proof pure grain alcohol (ethanol). i have to do it this way because i dont have scales. BUT i have to tools needed to dislove amt into pure grain then evaperate off the alcohol leaveing the dosage (in mg) i want. i wont need more than a pint of pure grain will i? 1 pint (US liq.) = 473.0370758891489 milliliter/cc and should i worry about evaporateing off the amt with the pure grain? i thought i read some where that amt has a low evaperation point and i plan on useing a hot plate or a no flame stove top. any advice or better ideas for doseing amt (without scales) would greatly be appriciated [This message has been edited by Morbo (edited 06-07-2001).]

Re: question for all you kitchen chemists
i'm a bit confused, sorry. Are you trying to clean it? You are using more than a pint right? It is completely dissolved when you don't have to stir it, heat it, or manipulate the solution to not see the powder GRAINS precipitating either at the bottom or the top(rare) of the solution. Completely purifying the everclear by fractionally distilling the ethanol out will help you get a more accurate soluability ratio. Having water in the solution might create a mixuture suspension for a brief period of time when it becomes heated if the amt isn't soluable in water, but i dont know about amt and soluability. I really dont know enough about the bp and mp of amt to completely tell you what will happen. Everything might go fine without using pure ethanol. As you boil the amt could precipitate down to the bottom, but then i dont understand the point of dissolving it all in the first place since a good ethanol or acetone wash and cold filtration without completely dissolving all the amt in the solvent should clean it fine if thats what you are doing. What are you doing anyway? Like im serious i dont understand the point of this.

Re: question for all you kitchen chemists
the point of dissolving a substance in a solvent and then evaporating the solvent -dear sleepwalker333 - is that a lot of ppl. dont have acess to a milligram scale. so if you dissolve let's say 1000 mg of amt in 100 ml methanol you have 10 mg/ml of amt in the solvent. now if you take 1 ml of solvent and evaporate it you'll have 10 mg of pure substance without using an expensive (and sometimes hard to get)mg-scale. ~Morbo just take your everclear and let it evaporate at room temperature (it takes a while) so the precious substance won't be hurt or altered during the process

Re: question for all you kitchen chemists
thank you strych-9. sorry i confused you slp i wuz f'd up hehe.
i will have 1000mg btw. should i use that ratio you above mentioned:
so if you dissolve let's say 1000 mg of amt in 100 ml methanol you have 10 mg/ml of amt in the solvent. now if you take 1 ml of solvent and evaporate it you'll have 10 mg of pure substance .
and does it take forever for the solution to evaperate at room tempature? i dont' wanna wait forever ;/ thx again though!

It will create a good amount of fumes be sure to keep it well ventilated. How long I dunno for sure mabye 1-2 days not too bad. I suppose it depends on weather conditions and stuff to.

Re: question for all you kitchen chemists
oh, now i get it. cool cool. no scale, ah, me need new one too . yea so i answered it right i guess. its soluable like without being manipulated(heated, stirred etc..) to make it more soluable temporaraly. does it say how much amt is soluble in ethanol@ what temp cause it varies on the temp of the everclear. so um, when you start to see the amt precipitate, its to far; add in small increments.

Re: question for all you kitchen chemists
n/m i've already scared myself out of doing it. i'd rather have a bad trip than lose 100 bucks. amt od's aren't that bad anyways i heard. i'll take that 1000mg and separate it into 20 50mg piles then cap it all. i shouldn't be off that much on each dose. atleast i hope not...

you could figure out how much is the max that fits into an 00 or 0 size cap too, maybe....

Re: question for all you kitchen chemists
No one is trying to make anything. Just extracting amt. and he wanted to figure out how to get a certain amount without a scale.
