Soxhlet Extractors
Anybody play with these things? How about with nutmeg extraction? [This message has been edited by Laboratorio Farmaceutico (edited 06-09-2001).]

Re: Soxhlet Extractors
Here's a picture of some allihn condensers. The one on the left is designed to be used with the big soxhlet extractor above. The left middle one has teflon tape on the rubber stopper to reduce contamination from the stopper. The stoppers fit into the three left (smaller) soxhlet extractors shown above. I think Everclear makes a good solvent for a lot of things even if it is expensive. Its less toxic (and probably less carcinogenic) than a lot of other solvents. *Kills fab, steals jis lab supplies*
No really, is this post to make me feel poor or completely, utterly amateur?
A myristicin(aka methoxysafrole[MeO-Safrole]) extraction would just be the VERY begginning bro. Seriously, why fuck around with that? If you wanna stay legal, get some bufo alvarius hides in there(the venom would have bufotenin in it and might be subject to prosecution).

Re: Soxhlet Extractors
I'm wondering if other people use them here and just posting a picture showing different types with different connectors. The essential oil of nutmeg contains myristicin, safrole, elemicin and some other related things and about 80% camphene. Safrole and elemicin are soluble in alcohol and myristicin is slightly soluble in alcohol. Trimyristicin, the main fat in nutmeg is also soluble in alcohol. After extraction with alcohol, I would think you could seperate the essential oil from the fat by distillation under a vacuum. Distillation at atmospheric pressure would probably decompose the fat.
I'm wondering how extraction of nutmeg compares to steam distillation. Soxhlet extractors run automatically and seem to be easier to use compared to steam distillation. I never tried extracting nutmeg with a soxhlet extractor before.

Re: Soxhlet Extractors
which alkaloid do you plan to isolate, or because of the soxhlet, do you plan on getting them all? i really havent read into this but it really doesn't seem like a soxhlet job and more like a solvent/filtration moreso, but wtf do i know?

Re: Soxhlet Extractors
Myristicin, safrole and elemicin aren't alkaloids, they're allyl benzenes. I want to isolate the allyl benzenes.

Here's some things I found on nutmeg extraction. http://164.195.100.11/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=/netahtml/srchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1='4832974'.WKU.&OS=PN/4832974&RS=PN/4832974 http://164.195.1 00.11/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=/netahtml/srchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1='5120558'.WKU.&OS=PN/5120558&RS=PN/5120558
Also, Acorus Calamus is discussed in column 4 lines 23+ in US patent 3757490. The text is not available at http://www.uspto.gov . You can use this web page to look it up. http://www.geocities.com/dritte123/PSPF.html
