Iodine from salt?
I was reading the side of an iodized salt container, and it said it contained 45% iodine. Is there anyway it could be extracted?

Re: Iodine from salt?
Ill ask the chemists here at work- we use iodine in our labs but Ive never used it in any formulas. Are there different types of iodine? Ive been thinking about borrowing some cause its called for in an upcoming project I might follow up on. I try not to ask the lab guys too much cause I dont want them to suspect me when stuff comes up missing.

Re: Iodine from salt?
GO to a pharmacy and buy iodine... almost any pharmacy should have it.. just buy the shit that says iodine tinticure.. then you can convert it to a useable product from there...

Re: Iodine from salt?
I talk to our chemist here at work and he laughed... he said "why doesnt he just use his ear wax, it would be alot easier"- apperently there is iodine in your ear wax. hhhmmm .but anyways, he said it could be done but for the amount of time and the cost of reagents it just wouldnt be worth it. But he said if you ever did to let him know cause he'd like watch.

Re: Iodine from salt?
BULLSHIT!
Your chemist is a fucking moron!
A balanced chemical equation for the reaction is:
2NaI + MnO2 + 2H2SO4 --> I2+ MnSO4 + Na2SO4 + 2H2O
Also potassium iodide -or- KI can be substituted for the NaI in this reaction.
Elemental iodine is prepared in small amount through the oxidation of an iodide compound with manganese dioxide. The iodine is sublimed by heating the reaction vessel and crystallizing the iodine vapor using an ice-cooled vessel.
It's a little dangerous but there's a way to use potassium permanganate instead of MnO2.
You see KMnO4 + sulphuric acid will spontaneously explode if an adaquate amount of water is not present due to the formation of permanganic acid.
Regardless, using KMnO4 sold as a regenerater for older water softeners and sulphuric acid from industrial strength drain cleaner along with your iodine salt and you can get elemental iodine.
I haven't done this with iodine but I have used this method/formula once before to produce bromine.
In fact this is a common schoolastic chemistry experiment (using MnO2 not KMnO4).

Re: Iodine from salt?
Ya you can do all that SHIT posted above OR go to a pharmacy but some 7% iodine tinticure and convert it.. much easier and safer.. but if ya want to take the hard way..

Re: Iodine from salt?
MY CHEMIST IS SMARTER THAN YOUR CHEMIST
Now why is he a "fucking" moron? did He say something that wasnt true? I read all your mumbo jumbo and still cant figure out why you said that? Now since your so smart why dont you answer the question the way the guy wants it answered. Hes got this salt with iodine in it. He wants to extract this iodine. How does he do this? waiting........

heh,, even if he explains it it is still a complicated waste of time.. just like you and i already said but i am still interested in this so yes do tell.. Clean.

Re: Iodine from salt?
Why does it seen complicated? It seems sane to me. It is the KMnO4 rxn that is dangerous and hard. Besides, he states that it is a scoolastic experiment. I used to own a chemistry set a long time ago and there wasn't a single experiment that wasn't harder to do than making your own E. There is also 45% iodine in NaI, there is only 7% in tincture.

Re: Iodine from salt?
Also if you were real chemists, you could READ THE FUCKING EQUATION, and figure it out. It tells me that you need 2 moles NaI, 1 mole MnO2, and 2 moles H2SO4. Do you reflux, stir, perform in an ice bath? Those are only questions that can be answered as a result of experimentation.

Re: Iodine from salt?
quote: Iodized salt is prepared by adding 0.006-0.01 % potassium iodide (KI). Stabilizing agents dextrose and sodium thiosulfate are added at levels of 0.04% or 0.05%, respectively. Anticaking or free-flowing agents are normally held to levels of 1-1.5 %.
Information obtained from the National Salt Institute... http://www.saltinstitute.org/37.html Now tell me again why you would want to fo this? Clean. [This message has been edited by Mister_Clean (edited 10-05-2000).]

Re: Iodine from salt?
I must be really stupid cause I havent seen any posts on HOW to extract the iodine from salt. Just these post with more technical jargon than you can shake a stick at. Is anyone gonna answer the question "how do you EXTRACT the iodine from the salt " .. I hope the next post is the answer....if anyone knows

Re: Iodine from salt?
Oh excuse me you are correct!
Your chemist was right. I didn't think you guys were so naive here that you were trying to extract the trace amounts of iodine from table salt!
45% of your "recommended daily allowance" not 45% iodine.. I get it now!
If by some chance you did mean NaI and that's where you got this 45% from my "technical jargon" will be your best friend if you want elemental iodine!
Huh?
Gram for gram preparing I2 from a bulk salt such as KI or NaI will be cheaper than evaporating a 7% tincture if want a considerable amount.
As for the equation using KMnO4 it goes like this:
5MgI2 +2 KMnO4 +8 H2SO4 = 5 MgSO4 +5 I2 +1 K2SO4 +2 MnSO4 +8 H2O
Although Mg has a +2 valence you can just a s easily balance the reaction to work with an +1 alkaline metal such as K or Na.
To do it safely, the sulphuric acid sol would be added to the iodine salt & the KMnO4 would be dissolved in water & then added dropwise to the acid & salt solution while stirring.
If the amounts are calculated correctly no accumulation of permanganic acid will occur and thus there would be minimal potential for a fire or explosive reaction.
Once the reagents are mixed they can be allowed to sit overnight @ ambient temperatures and then separarted the next day by a simple sublimation, which for all pratical purposes is essentially the same as distillation.
If you had high school chemistry you would realize that by using the thermodynamic constants it's possible to calculate the "Delta H" or 'heat of reaction' for this equation. Knowing if the reaction exothermic or endothermic will jurisdict wheter or not a reflux or ice bath is necessary. Thermodynamics will also give you an idea of how fast such a reaction will proceed.
There's another way to seperate halogen salts too. The device is relatively simple, it uses no other reagents than water and the halogen salt. It's done via electroylsis using an aparatus called a "Nelson Cell". Of course since I'm so fucking stupid I guess there's no need to go into any furthur details.

Re: Iodine from salt?
Whatever man.
You apparently know everything already.... except for chemistry!
I'd also like to make one minor correction at this point the iodine salt should be made into a solution with the permanganate and not the acid as I mentioned earlier.
The sulfuric is added dropwise to the soln of iodine salt & KMNO4 .. otherwise there's the potential for generating HI gas which can give you pulmonary edema if you're not careful!

Re: Iodine from salt?
Hmm, i dont know I am just a newbee with the chemistry but it seems to me that it would be faster and easier to go to a farm store and buy a gallon of iodide tincture and convert it. I have a great little recipe for that and you get huge yeild from it too. If you want it let me know.

Re: Iodine from salt?
Id be interested in any recipe you have regarding meth production. Ive amassed quite a few now but none that Im willing to waste my money on yet. I found your grey meth post interesting since I see grey meth alot in my area. You mentioned "recrystalization" and Im wondering if this might be the same as what we call "re-rocking". This is to take not so good dope and cover it with better dope and then its sold in rock form by unscrupulous cooks. This ends up looking like giant snowballs but when you cut them in half you can see the two different types of dope. _sound familliar?
