Erotic Art V. Pornography
Is there a difference between these two categories? And where is the line drawn? Should any line be drawn?
I wonder why there aren't more graphic depictions/ descriptions of sexual acts in novels, movies, etc. It's okay for a PG audience to see people getting gutted or decapitated, but it's somehow wrong to see penetration, orgasm & full frontal nudity. What's up with our culture? Why are the Puritans so rabidly anti-sex but apathetic about film violence?

Re: Erotic Art V. Pornography
The Puritan mindset is fading, slowly but surely..
Is there a difference? Yeah, I think there is. In my mind, erotic art is subtle, something that makes you think of the more emotional aspects of sex, the enjoyment of being with a certain person, doing gentle, pleasurable things. Porn is all about raw, hardcore fucking. It may not BE raw, hardcore fucking, but that's the mindset of it.
There have been debates about certain pieces of art, whether they're pornographic or simply erotic, and if you look at them objectively, by and large you can see how someone could view it either way.

Re: Erotic Art V. Pornography
Artwork has a meaning beyond the superficial nature or it's form. Pornography is simply documentation of an act. There's a big difference, albeit not a very important one.
Sometimes in a story the details of the sexual encounter are not necessary to the plot. I often become uncomfortable when I have to sit through an extended love scene in a movie or show. It's distracting to the audience when you diverge from the story. Why isn't there more sexually-oriented fiction where graphic scenes are appropriate is a far better question.
I'd like to know why there's so much hatred of the penis and fear of the vagina in the US and England... It's strange and upsetting. When you cut your penis in half, you're sick. When you have someone slice off a good portion of it, you're a faithful.

Re: Erotic Art V. Pornography
let me put this crudely...
erotic art, targets the mind, as well as bodily desires...
pornography targets desire for sex only...
imagine this.. after watching a porn movie.. what do you do..? you think of how they did it, and where they manage to put it, and so on,,but thats it..
watch a piece of erotic art, and see how your mind can wander... you think of a lot more than what you saw..there is hidden meaning in everything that was done, and more than one idea can be brought forward... you can really ponder about it, and truly observe the beauty of it in your mind...
i dont like porn movies, since it makes the act of sex so obliviant.. watching an erotic artwork makes it a beautiful encounter..
as a final note...i trust you have all seen both a porn movie, as well as erotic performance..
which one gives you ideas..? c'mon,,be honest..is there anything they do in a porn movie that you could not have thought up in 10 seconds... an erotic artwork, gives you a different mindset, and something to ponder on..you can from such a performance enhance your own ideas to a state where a truly beautiful act can be performed between two people...

Re: Erotic Art V. Pornography
Sorry, couldn't resist that little jab!
But erotic art. . . well, I am a collector of erotic art - paintings, photos, words. . . (sorry no movies). What I find common in these is the portrayal of a particular feeling or sensation during the act of making love (or leading up to it). Porn doesn't do that - its not a reflection of reality at all.
My favorite erotic picture in the whole world is where a woman lays at the edge of a bed with her frilly skirts hoisted up around her and a man is screwing her standing up but the expression on his face is one of pain and horror because his bum just got used as a scratching post by a cat!!!! A comment by the artist about the agony and ecstasy contained in love making? Possibly, but the point is that it is memorable, stirring up sympathetic feelings within you. What do I remember about any porn I have ever watched? The ridiculousness of the plot? The tremendous size of some man's genitals? Or huge tits of some woman?
Porn is a manipulation of your body to produce a certain reaction - Art coaxes you into responding. . .

Re: Erotic Art V. Pornography
looks like everyone posting in this topic have a better interest in erotic art than porn.. what a pleasant thought.
A very erotic image in my mind is as follows.
A woman lying on a bed.Wait..lets describe the bed first.
The bed is larger than any standard size.Its covered in white silk and so are the pillows. a woman lies on the bed and is covered halfway, exposing only her breasts and partial mid-body. You can see every curve of the rest of her through the slikyness and can actually feel her without touching. Her eyes are closed as if asleep, her hands spread up abover her head, toucing the bedposts, revealing the sensual skin below her arms, and putting her in a very vulnerable position. This portrayes the softness and beauty of a woman, and making her beauty available for all to see, yet she's vulnerable and she chooses to be, so she is in a place where she feels safe.

Re: Erotic Art V. Pornography
My - what sensuous thoughts you have, Cat!
Hey! That's it! Erotic art displays sensuous thought - that's what distinguishes it from porn! Porn also appeals only to one sense in you, the sense of lust - Erotica elicits reaction from the faculty of your imagination and all the senses it employs; softly working to engage your desire and slowly build you to a climax.

Re: Erotic Art V. Pornography
I like the way Cat's mind works.
I don't know about a greater interest in porn than Erotic Art (EA). I like the EA (words, pics, music? and movies) but one look at my links and you would never belive it.
I use porn but I don't admire porn I enjoy EA and admire it.
Someone said the difference is clear and it is if you takes the picture Cat painted with words and a typical top shelf mag like Razzle or Mayfair.
But getting closer to the line we have the air brushed beuty in penthouse and we have the paintings by traditional artists of nudes.
funny how in EA we have nudes and in porn we have some thing else but words have failed me.
A girl/woman i know vaguly paints her self nude. I'll find the link - soon.
~Kameron Madness takes its toll, please have exact change

well, sorta like the piece i wrote, but better and in more detail, or maybe a link to an erotic image where we can all have a look and share our opinions on whether to classify it erotic or porn..

Re: Erotic Art V. Pornography
that's totally dependant on the view of the observer;
if a pedophile sees a naked 12 year old to him it is probably erotic art;
a body at full developmental speed can be quite a turn on;
to a freak;
but they don't understand that;
i think guys that like women totally shaved are closet pedophiles.
don't worry pretty soon in this politically correct you'll have your parade too.
(sorry, i've been tweaking for a couple of days and am quite cynical)

Re: Erotic Art V. Pornography
I think a film called "Vampire Ecstasy" aka "Veil of Blood" is a great erotic film. It isn't hard core but it's very intensely erotic- more so than most porn. It's from the early '70s and was done by Swedish director Joe Sarno.
There's a company called "Something Weird Video" which offers just that. Most of the stuff that they offer is nudie cutey, bizarro nudist films with monsters, crazy, crazy stuff- and there's something erotic about some of it because it's lowbrow, the gals are natural and it seems sort of innocent. They also offer hours and hours of old go-go dancer reels which are a lot of fun.
Then there's some stuff that straddles the line, like the movie CALIGULA. It has something to offend and/ or titillate everyone. And what about Annie Sprinkle, who went from hardcore porn star to sexual performance artist? It's in the eye of the beholder, probably.

Re: Erotic Art V. Pornography
how can you be an artist and criticize somebody else's way of expressing how they feel or what they see;
simply because it doesn't appeal to you.
i suppose people who are critical of your work in a negative way just have no understanding of what art is.
or could it be they have no understanding of what art is to you.

Re: Erotic Art V. Pornography
Its true, u cannot break down someone elses view of art because urs is different.
but....is porn really art..?
cheesy music and nothing but fucking... i dont clasify that as art..
i had a look at the url posted, but find nothing in there that causes a tinkle in me. its all very beautiful, but does not give me the true erotic sense that i want in erotic art..i would put that under the standard art section..not erotic..!
thats my opinion though..
