implants
My girlfriend has these weird subcutaneous implant things for birth control. It really makes sex convenient (we both got tested for HIV & stuff) and the lack of condoms is nice. But the whole ideal if implants that release birth control drugs over the course of years seems weird. Anyone heard of this or know about possible side effects?

Re: implants
yah i know a little, had one a woman too who had one....it IS convenient...its AFAIK basically the same thing like the contraception in pills form, the same stuff/hormones....instead that its dissolving/released w/o able to forget ab. it its a device that looks like a 'T' usually it lasts for ab. 2 or 3 years, then it needs to be exchanged...some women dont like 'artifical' things in their wombs, and others get sore 'cos of the 'attaching areas' where its placed inside the womb. sideeffects ? not that i know of...but AFAIK their are the same as with contraception pill side effects.... [added...] uhm....not that i wanna scare ya/her...but i dont know how it is if the hormones failing and she GETS pregnant, since its in the womb, wouldnt it disturb the development of the fetus/get into trouble ? just my 2 At [This message has been edited by Atlana+ (edited 04-05-2000).]

Re: implants
Norplant..? I'm not down for injections. I'll just stick to pre-pub little girls.

Re: implants
I think it's norplant. Not in the womb. Under the skin. Anywhere. Like the ones aliens put under peoples' skin. Oh...I wasn't supposed to say that.

Re: implants
At: As far as I know, the only way the hormones could fail would be if they didn't get distributed around the system, so any possibility of deformities would pretty much be rendered null. The IUD you were talking about really isn't used so much any more, it's been known to do some pretty nasty damage to the womb, and has caused birth defects. The norplant is just creepy though, the thought of someone sticking whats basically a super sized time released capsule in my arm just creeps me out, shots or the pill are so much easier... wow, that was one heluva ramble

Re: implants
I get the depoprovera shots.. they're awesome.. 4 times a year, zero side effects (the pill made me feel like a total screwup and gave me headaches) and no periods.. what could be better than that? and the injections don't even cost that much.. bout $60 every 13 weeks.. cheap when you consider what the pill costs, and what tampax costs too.. Mind you, wish I was still living in England, because there the government makes all contraceptives free.. including condoms if you get them from your doctor..
