Wintermute is an Artificial Intelligence in William Gibson's classic cyberpunk novel Neuromancer.

A slightly less flattering character named Wintermute was a retarded savant who was pushed into the Crusades by his wealthy family in order to get rid of him in a somewhat honorable fashion. He could look at the sky and instantly determine latitude. He couldn't figure longitude, though, and got his entire party lost and founded a doomed settlement in the middle of nowhere.

The quotation you refer to is from Neuromancer.

Do you know of any other William Gibson books worth looking at? Neuromancer is pretty good.

Dammit, now I have to find my copy and read it again.

As for names, I was determined to find something totaly unique, but not so hard to remember. It took me a few hours to come up with the handle I use most everywhere, Promethean Sky. The only reason I don't use it here is that I originaly signed on with it, but the system wouldn't accept my password.

Just because we didn't respond to his post doesn't mean we ignored it.

Well, speaking for myself at least...
