Default Lawless lands

Where in the world are some places with no or very weak goverments?

I also want to know why these places have weak or no goverments.

I was inspired by this thread to make this post.

I fail to see what this has to do with weapons and/or combat. Moved.

Check out this site or the book The World's Most Dangerous Places by Robert Young Pelton (the same Pelton that broke the John Walker Lindh story.) Some of the info is inaccurate, but on the whole it's interesting and informative.

At the top of my list of places for dream vacations would probably be Colombia. Nothing destroys a society like 40+ years of civil war. The key players right now are the ELN, FARC, AUC, and the Military. The ELN and FARC are leftist guerrilla groups with ties to the drug industry, the IRA, and to Latin American commies Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez (president of neighboring Venezuela.) The AUC is a right wing para-military group that also has ties to the drug industry. The AUC is believed to be responsible for most of the massacres that occur in Colombia. The military is poorly trained and equipped and often collaborates with the AUC. The US provides $1.5 billion a year in military aid to Colombia in order to help with the War on Drugs and to protect American oil interests. Things had cooled down a bit in the last couple of years. Pastrana granted the FARC an autonomous zone about the size of Switzerland in the southwest and didn't mess with them much until they started a wave of kidnappings last winter. Pastrana said "No more" and sent his elite troops, who had just been trained by America, in to do a bit of housekeeping. Incidently, the crackdown also happenned when the Colombian presidential campagning was just swinging into high gear. The winner was hard-liner Alvarro Uribe whose solution to the 40 year old civil war is to win by killing all the rebels. Of course, this is all political stuff. There is also danger for folks who don't want to be involved in any of that. Colombia has the highest murder rate in the western hemisphere. On the streets of Medellin a teenage hitman can be hired for $50. I'm getting tired of writing, but you get the idea. In Colombia you can also worry about being kidnapped for ransom, having money extorted from you by either real or fake police, and the typical pickpockets and thieves. I've seen as low as $600 round trip airline tickets between Dallas and Bogota and I hear the weather is really nice.

I hope that was interesting. I might write about some other places, probably in more general terms. Most of my information comes from Mr. Pelton's book and from regularly reading about international news for the past couple of years.

Edit: looking back at the original post, I'm not sure if this was really what you had in mind. I was thinking more along the lines of lawless than weak or non-existant government. In any case, the government of Colombia is just as thuggish as the thieves and rebels, so there might as well be no government...

They don't need a government. The Australian government is doing all the fucking up for them.

the australisn government gives the aboriginals shitloads of benefits which they waste.
everyone thinks they are all sitting on rocks, covered in bodypaint and playng a digeridoo and being one with nature.
in reality they are agressive alcoholic scroungers who want paying for doing nothing. apart from that i love oz

Yes, that is true. My mother is going to Australia in January to do studies on the Aboriginal culture.

The Aborigines don't need government financial aid.
They need a culture, identity, social structure, and some sort of point to life.
