Booze In My Basement
Ok, the other day i was looking around in my aunts basement, and noticed there was a box of booze with about 5 bottles of gin in it, all of it is unopened, and my aunt has no clue its there. What im wondering, is could the alcohol have gone bad and cause any sort of posioning or negative effects?

Re: Booze In My Basement
As long as the seals are intact, booze cannot go "bad", it is alcohol and is pretty much impervious to anything, that is the reason they use alcohol to sterilize things.
On the other hand, if you have never drank gin, you are in for a "treat?"

Re: Booze In My Basement
Alcohol is antiseptic, it kills bacteria that contacts it. People will easily drink 100 year old bottles of wine (if they can afford it) without any side effects (because it is perfectly fine). Gin has even more alcohol in it than wine and so, if the bottles are unopened, or even if they were and are still capped, they will be fine to drink.

No. Alcohol doesn't go bad...it only evaporates. The negative effect is called (depending on quantity consumed) hangover or in an extreme situation...worship (at the porcelain altar. Nox

No, drinking gin is like chewing on pine needles. Mix it with Juice or Koolaide. Snoop and the homeboyz have it right.

Re: Booze In My Basement
I've always thought gin tasted like some industrial strength cleaner. Then I realize that the cleaner would probably be less toxic. Daquiri mix does a good job of killing the taste, by the way.

Re: Booze In My Basement
but what if the drink is tequila, although unsealed is kept in a plastic bottle for many many years, would that not do something to it?

Tequila is made from cactus...so what. Alcohol is alcohol. Yes the color may darken, but that's not the alcohol, it's the other ingredients.
Don't forget what Global said...it's true.

Re: Booze In My Basement
I am a big fan of good gin, I am very jealous that some dude is going to swill back on well aged stuff. This is my favorite gin recipie, you can put 4 shots in a pint mug and not taste it(much) Mix 3 oz gin 2 oz melted cranberry of grapefruit juice concentrate Slowly fill up the glass with cold fresh soda water, mixing slowly while you pour Add ice, if you do it right the effect is like alchaholic sody pop Cheers

I'm not a liquor expert, but I've been told that liquor only 'ages' in the cask, not the bottle. For what it's worth. Nox

Re: Booze In My Basement
Most likely true, I am not really sure of the chemistry but, uuhh "ketones" and "volatile terpines" are a part of liquor flavor, ketones from the sour mash and terpines from the elderberry in the case of gin or resins from aging casks in the case of whiskey. I am sure these chemicals still have some reactive potential even after being bottled, and therefore the flavor may change over time. Could be wrong but we found a bottle of tequila in my uncles liquor cabinet a few years ago that was at least 20 years old, it was some of the best liquor I have ever had. Whether this is because they made better tequila back then, or because of the age is debateable.

Re: Booze In My Basement
Nox is correct, liquor ages in the cask, not in the bottle. many liquors flavor depends on the barrels it is stored in. once the liquor hits airtight glass it is preserved the same as the day it left the cask.
gin, is a seriously acquired taste. moreso than most liquors. i can drink most things, but gin is one of them that i just cant stand, so much that i dont have a chance to acquire that taste. its just downright nasty.
"Daquiri mix does a good job of killing the taste, by the way."
Rum or Vodka will go much better with daquiri mix. most gin drinkers will drink it virtually straight, or mixed with other liquors, but not usually mixed with much of anything. there is the classic gin and tonic, but good luck stomaching that if you dont drink alot of gin. try mixin up a martini, with some vermouth, gin, and either a green olive, or a lemon peel. martini drinkers are usually very set in the way that they prepare one. some say that you should use say 4:1 gin:vermouth. some like an olive, some a lemon peel. some say that it should just be straight gin, and even some like to throw in some vodka. whatever you do, your first time drinking gin will most likely be a memorable one. eventually when youre not so hard up for a buzz and wont do just anything to get drunk youll probably wonder why the hell you ever did it in the first place.

Re: Booze In My Basement
I would have never started drinking gin if it wasn't for a line in a certain song: Tanqeray and tonic My favorite drink Don't like anything colored pink That just stinks
Any guesses as to the band?

Re: Booze In My Basement
Why not instead enjoy a good fruit flavored brandy or scotch on the rocks before drinking something that tastes like turpentine.

Re: Booze In My Basement
Lots of fruit juice and soda water will kill the taste of just about anything. Wow gin sure is taking a beating, I love the stuff, but then again I also eat anchovy and bleu cheese sandwiches, so maybe it is me that's fucked.

Doesn't wine turn to vinegar if you leave it long enough?

Re: Booze In My Basement
If it still has active yeast in it, it will, but usually the yeast used in fermentation is tailored to die at a certain alchoholic content, otherwise we would not be able to age wine.

Sometimes the cork dries out, air gets to the wine, which subsequently turns to vinegar. Nox

Rum is smooth tasting. If pirates could drink it regularly, then you can also. Mix it with OJ or Apple Juice

Everyone remember that... Wine bottles are stored on there side for a reason. It keeps the cork wet. Dry cork = Vinegar = No drunkishness. And, I like gin.... Well, then again, I have no problem at all with opening my liqure cabinet and mixing together every single thing that's open......
