Actually it's not that impressive. From what I understand he's taking shots not in excess of 100 yards. I have minimal training with my M4 and I can hit a human siloette open sights (no scope) out to and exceeding 100 meters.

#1 the media reported a round chambered in .223

Keep in mind though the media often confuses .223 with 5.56 nato.

Both rounds generally produce a muzzle velocity of over 3,000 fps (feet per second) and deliver over 1,000 ft/lb (units of energy). More than enough to defeat light body armor.

5.56 SS109 surplus ammunition can be purchased. This is a legal AP (armor piercing round), it has a composition of a copper jacket over a steel core seated by lead.

There is a difference between .223 and 5.56N

Keep in mind the media often makes reference to pistols as "high powered weapons" and couldn't tell you the difference between .357MAG and .357SIG if their life depended on it (see lady caught with gun in airport story, claimed it was husbands about a few months ago).

They use either M193, M855 or SS109.

Although the majority of police and military snipers don't use a .223 or 5.56N...

more along the lines of a 30.06 or .308 (7.62x51mm)

i knew they were .223 poop. and i knew no one shoots .223 in a long range high risk scenario. but i liked that you presumed i knew nothing(cause well it would have helped someone that didnt know anything). i remember that .357 fiasco. they said "the lady had a .357 magnum then they showed some file footage of someone handling a sig...they could at least try to be accurate.

After reading "Black Hawk Down" by Mark Bowden (READ THAT BOOK), I have learned that armor piercing rounds (plastic coated titanium slugs) suck. They do not have stopping power because they go right through, make a smaller hole than other kinds, etc. If they are armor piercing then I'd suspect the sniper stole his ammo from the military because I don't think they are easily obtainable by anyone else.

People are too concerned with all these spurious "guesses" as to who the sniper is. There is not even close to enough evidence to know who this guy is to begin to guess. Why did he kill a 13-year old kid? His targets are random but they serve one purpose and one purpose only, to terrorize the people in the D.C., Maryland area. Killing a kid will take the cap off of millions of people's sanity-cans right off the bat. If you have kids you know what I mean, you don't care about yourself, just the safety of your kids. Sending them in a bus to school where they can be shot by a random sniper will scare the shit out of the biggest cross section of the population. The sniper DOES NOT want to be caught. He is nothing like SAM or Zodiac. His agenda is CRYSTAL CLEAR. He wants to TERRORIZE the seat of our federal government. How can society move on when nearly everyone is afraid to buy gas or groceries or send their kids to school? Very soon, if not now, panic begins to set in and the sniper ALONE is responsible. One man with a rifle TERRORIZING the populace of the D.C. metro area. That is amazing. Just like a handful of extremists with BOXCUTTERS taking down the WTC and killing 3,000 people. I guarantee every current and past US military sniper is being checked out by the FBI right now. I would be VERY suprised if this is a former military man. Unlike the average angry white man serial killer, this man is doing this for a HIGHER CAUSE than personal reasons. Serial Killers want to be caught because they cannot control themselves. This guy can control himself and DOES NOT INTEND TO BE CAUGHT. He will only be caught by pure luck or a fantastic mistake on his part. You do not need to be a military trained sniper to shoot people from 100-200 yards with a deer rifle. This guy fits NO PROFILES and will continue his terror. If more of these snipers show up in other areas of the country I would not be suprised. He is trying to terrorize the US populace, period. Whether he is a CIA spook trying to win support for Bush's war on IRAQ and Terror, or the terrorist's themselves, I do not and cannot know, and neither can any of you. I think the conspiricy angle is shit, the government DOES NOT do this kind of stuff, go back to reading comic books if you believe that kind of crap. The fact is NO ONE KNOWS WHO THIS GUY IS, including anyone in this forum. I personally believe this man is connected to the JIHAD that has been publically DECLARED on this country. I still am baffled when people say things like: "You can't assume his is a muslim or islamic, etc. he could be anyone." Actually I CAN say that, they have PUBLICALLY DECLARED a HOLY WAR on the United States. That kind of puts them on the top of the list for me. It is not stereotyping or un-PC to think this way. These people will stop at nothing to screw with the US and they are finally importing the methods they have been perfecting in Isreal for low these many years.

Unless its a police sniper or a military sniper(in action)anyone who hides while they shoot someone from a distance just so they can kill them is a fucking coward.And as for the serial killer wanting to get caught,whilst the sniper doesn't well that might be true for some,but you cannot tell me that all the worlds serial killers want to be or are caught.Think jack the ripper?There must be hundreds of killers whom have never been caught over the years.

I couldn't agree with you more ridemypony. This guy (or girl) does not want to be caught. Their goal is to terrorize and that is it. One thing we can assume is this person does have some sort of training with a rifle. Now this could mean many things, from military, to police/swat, to hunting, (hell ever think this guy might be a huge big game hunter who got tired of hunting animals) to a guy or girl who play one too many first person shooter games. We don't know... Hell it may end up like Jack the Ripper, and we may never know.
