I figured i'd start good invention and bad invention discussion... Let's see good invention would be by John J Baird The Television... Bad inention of course Robert Julius Oppenheimer Atomic Bomb. So whether you choose the Wright Brothers or Thomas Edison, Planes, Light or even the peg. Have fun...

The government has done so many great things. And no, the internet is not one of them. The internet just spreads filth and lies, and anti-government stuff i hate that I really hate anti-government stuff: I'm a capitalist.

Re: inventions...
if youre a capitalist you should hate the government which has so interjected itself into the economy.
Further the atom bomb saved the lives of half a million americans and thirteen million japanese. It also arguealby prevented world war III.

I could say, I never thought about it that way...But to tell you the truth I am curious what do you mean by that? maybe it's just my lack of knowledge regards to the complete histry of the atomic bomb, I know a little about hiroshima. On the 6th of August 1945 or was it 46, it was the target of the first atomic bomb...You know trivial stuff, so could you explain a liitle more on that.

the atomic bomb would have been dropped in that war no matter who it was. the americans put all this effort into making it, they were as sure as hell going to try it out. japan was just unlucky, and i don't know where you got 13million japanese saved from, did dropping the bomb protect them from themselves or something?

"japan was just unlucky, and i don't know where you got 13million japanese saved from, did dropping the bomb protect them from themselves or something?"
Alright kid, you need to watch some history channel pacific ww2 specials. Japan was not unlucky. Japan was stupid and stubborn. The Japanese government had convinced it's forces to never surrender even the smallest parcel of land. They'd sooner die than let an acre size island fall to our kickass navy. So we'd obliterate them to take the island. That's why we had to use the bomb on them. If we tried what we did at normandy, we would have had to kill nearly the entire population to take Japan. Instead, we just turned a couple million japanese into shadows on concrete, saving the rest, and no americans shed a drop of blood. They refused to surrender not after 1, but 2 bombs. We accomplished with modern science in 2 days what it would have taken months or years to accomplish by 'conventional' warfare. Questions, class?

Re: inventions...
Mr. Phantom is correct. But Japan WAS unlucky, the original targets for the bomb were Hamburg, Munich, the Ruhr, and yes; Berlin. When the Germans capitulated, the big crosshairs were swung to the other side of the earth.

Re: inventions...
The actual figures are closer to 1 million Americans, 1/2 million other Allieds, and 5 million Japanese would be lost in Operations Olympic and Coronet, which would occur after the bombs were dropped had Japan not surrendered. The figures were extrapolated from the Okinawa invasion.

The internet was conceived at the universities, then later, turned over to the military. Internet history primer I guess that puts the gov't back to zero, doesn't it?

Re: inventions...
Didn't Al Gore invent the internet. That's what he says anyway.
The point is the internet is the greatest invention of all time. Gutenberg's printing press let the masses have access to all sorts of info. The internet is that times a million.

are you the most gullable person to have ever walked the earth??? not even a monkey would believe that Al Gore invented the internet. By the way it was actually current US president George Dubya who invented it

Re: inventions...
good invention: those sensors that sense when youre done pissing, and flush the toilet for you.
bad invention: the same sensors that are on sinks, that keep shutting off the water when youre washing your hands.

Re: inventions...
oh yeah, about the atomic bombs...america knew that japan was considering surrender, and japan made it clear that they were considering surrender, and both sides knew quite well that the conclusion would be surrender by the japanese.
america dropped the bombs anyway under the pretense of accelerating the surrender. this isn't true. ask any expert on the topic. the bombs would have been dropped somewhere else, if not in japan. the cold war had already started, and america wished to flaunt it's technological advantage in the face of the Soviet Union, along with testing the capabilities of the atomic bomb. quite true that the japanese were just unlucky.
peace out. sph3ric pyramid.

Re: inventions...
13 million is a rather conservative estimate of japanese casualties, as it was japanese civilians, that is to say women and children, were being trained to meet the us soldiers on the beach with bambo spears.

Re: inventions...
It is a simple fact that the Japanese refused to surrender under normal warfare actions. The Japanese government had the heads of households kill themselves and their families so that the fighting forces could have more resources. Many families complied.

Re: inventions...
No the ruling council was divided on the issue of surrender after nagasake, and it required the direct intervention of the largely puppet leader hirohito to push for surrender. The militarists wanted to use the lives of the women and children to prevent an unconditional surrender, which would result in their trial and execution for war crimes, which history will show was exactly what they recieved. So in effect the atomic bomb served a benevolent pourpose as demonstrated by simple arithmatic, for ever one it killed it saved 26.

No offense, Oppenheimer didn't invent the bomb, he was just in charge of the project to build it. You would have to blame Leo Sizlard (don't know if I spelled that right), Nels Bohr, Albert Einstein, and about 12 to 20 other guys for actually inventing it, it was a "little bit here, little bit there" kind of thing.

Re: inventions...
Hmmm... let's tie this together somehow.
Ahh, yes. After we toasted a good number of their population, America generously offered to help rebuild everything up to higher specs than it had been, turning Japan into a technological world power that makes extremely cool cybertoilets.
Good invention: Practical AC power [Nikola Tesla] - Can you imagine the world today if we were still using Edison's DC system and having to place generators every few miles?? It's safer, too. Yuck.
Bad invention: The incandescent bulb [Thomas A. Edison] - Yup. Fire hazard. Inefficient as hell. Relatively short lifespan. Poor approximation of natural light. High-frequency plasma lights are more efficient, last almost indefinitely, and can work wirelessly in the right setup.
Yes, I don't hold Thomas Edison in the highest regard. In so many aspects, he was a hack. He got by more on blind experimentation and showmanship than on actual innovation. He didn't invent the light bulb. He just improved it and made it somewhat practical. Even that was accomplished through hundreds of nearly random experiments, not real creativity. I'll give him movies and phonographs, but he wasn't a wizard, rather a very determined tinkerer.

But I think the first reply in this thread came the closest. God is Man's greatest invention. And Man is God's worst.

Re: inventions...
although its true that america wanted to show off its technology etc. there was also a real reason for doing it, it did save american lives. if you look at the way the Japanese fought for Midway, and other pacific islands under their possession, (ie sucidally). The bravest men in the world were those who went up against the Japanese, using single shot, six round rifles, unprotected and unshielded against the well hidden and well protected Japanese heavy machine guns and pill boxes. this is the way Japan fights for an island, how would they fight defending the homeland? The dropping of the atomic bombs were justified. Also, by banning Japan from having an attacking army, the US have helped Japan to build the 2nd largest economy on earth.
