Default scary question about the metroid

hey, i was just thinking about something weird about that metroid thats gunna hit earth in 2019...do u think they can really blow the meteroid up befour it hits earth? because theres no atmosphere in space, which means no fire can be made, so would a nucular bomb even be able to detinate in space?

Yes, a nuclear blast is a release of energy caused by the fissioning (and often, subsequent fusing) of atoms.

you should have kept this in the 2019 thread, but like dood up above said, a nuclear weapon could detonate in space. at least im 99% sure that it could.

Theres that 1% though and then we are fucked. There is more of a chance that it wont hit us though. Funny how the political world kept it under raps for a few weeks. God i hate the society we are being baught up in by the day.

You're right.

Neither fusion nor fission even use O2, let alone depend on it.

Combustion [fire] is a chemical reaction; various elements which combine with various others, change partners, so to speak [Yes, sorry, that the best Icould come up with at 4:14am]. Point here being thst the elements, themselves, don't change [i.e.: oxygen stays oxygen, carbon remains carbon, ect.].

On the other hand, fusion and fission are [i]nuclear
reactions: the elements themselves change into a different element[s]. In the case of fusion, two hydrogen atoms combine to make helium, releasing energy as it happens.

Fission, as you might have surmised, makes two or more elements from

Bzzzzz.

Wrong answer.

I'm sorry, but you dodn't win the Super-Ultra-Deluxe Greatest prize of all time.

But nobody goes away empty handed:

You can choose a booby prize either from Jay's tray, or you can take what's behind the curtain where Carol Merril is standing.

*Now then; if what you said were true, we [the human race] would still be planet bound.

Yes: there's no air in space.

Yes: You need air [or Oxygen, to be more precise] for combustion to happen.

Solution: Bring it [air] with you.

All rocket motors do this; bring a fuel and air, known as an oxidizer.

The shuttle carries, in it's main tank H2 & O2.

Solid fuel boosters do it too; it's just mixed in with the fuel - in the same fashion that fireworks are: When you get right down to it, solid fuel boosters are not much more than vastly scaled up Roman candles - to a certain extant.

It said in the paper that it'll take us 30 years to make a sufficient defense system anyway, so if it's on course, we're royally fucked.

hehe i thought he meant the game metroid.

umm Yeah, I was just watching something this morning that said every 18 months an asteroid about 3 football fields long passes between the earth and moon.. and every 100 years you get one that actually slams into earth. a rock 3 football fields long can do a lot of local damage. like a 50 megaton bomb going off.

the last one was 90 years ago in syberia. I think we are long over do.

you do realise that the chance of this thing hitting is 1 in 500,000? although that is better odds than winning the lottery..

Yes, a nuclear missile would explode once it hits the asteroid... question is, what good is it going to do?

Even if the entire collection of bombs (of any kind) found on earth could be released at the asteroid, do you think it'll cause sufficient damage?

You may not need to damage it at all: Knocking it off course would work. The farther away you can nudge it, the less it needs to be moved.

And how you're going to knock it off course? May I remind you that this thing is 2kms wide going at the approximate speed of 25kms per second (90000km/h). Nuclear weapons will affect it's tragectory as much as gun shots will affect a moving train.

Our best defense against the asteroid is to hope for a miss. If it comes to deflecting it, those feared weapons of mass destruction are nothing but fireworks.

In space a human could push this thing if he was traveling at the same speed. There is no weight in space so the only force is that of the speeding object itself. In space a 2 mile long iron mass of rock wouldnt weight a thing just as a feather in space wouldnt weight a thing. the bomb will deflect. We dont want to blow this fucker up and have it rain down several large rocks instead of one. it make cause even more damage then one large piece.

But the asteroid is going at an enermous speed! Even if it's weightless, it will stil crash any missiles fired at it thanks to the speed at which it travels.

And actually, breaking the asteroid into small pieces will do lots of good. Most of the pieces will burn in the atmosphere and the small bits that do make to the ground it are likely to fall in inhabited areas. Most of the earth is water, forest or desert. The human settlements compose merely a small percentage, so the odds of a meteor shower in some populated city are rather minuscule.

A strike at sea would cause a huge tidal wave. The fact of the matter is though is the meteor only has a roughly 1 in 200,000 chance of hitting the earth. If the odds increase I start buying more ammunition and an automatic weapon in addition to 3 tons of nitrogen packed grain for my serfs to plant.

you can be a vassal, your responsibility is to maintain a force of 50 armed men to serve in my army in time of conflict. Or you can be a jester or arch bishop of hillsborry, so I'm not at the mercy of the holy see mind you.

new findings from the NASA labs specializing in trajectory and jet propulsion say that the asteroid isnt going to hit earth afterall. the next closest threat of this kind is not expected until 2050 now.

it would be cool though, if it came close enough for us to be able to see it real well.
