There are currently 1,779 Hours of Nixon White House Tapes available for reproduction at the National Archives in College Park, Maryland, which is approximately half of the total hours of tapes. Out of that 1,779 hours, only 60 or so hours have been transcribed.

This is our private effort to transcribe all 1,779 hours of tape, a half-hour at a time. It's a big project, and will require a few dedicated people willing to help out a few hours every week, and hopefully we will get quite a few people willing to help! The more people we get the faster it will go.

Since the National Archives are in College Park, Maryland, volunteers from suburban Maryland/Washington DC/Northern Virginia are greatly needed. Unfortunately, access to the tapes is restricted to those over 18.

Surely there's gotta be other groups working on transcription, can't you just wait until they're done and then expose their work on TOTSE (giving them the full credit for the work, of course)?

Don't ask me why not. I was under the impression that the National Archives was going to be transcribing them.

But no. They have no intention on doing it.
No other group that I know of is doing it either.

So, I guess we are on our own.

that is amazing, id have thought that thered be at least a few special interest groups and old men interested in that shit. it is an interesting project. im only 2 hours from DC, but i dont have a car. im a loser like that.

I might not be able to help all that much because i live in England but, I was a Legal Secutary for several years, one of my tasks was transcribing meetings and the such, if someone could get the tapes onto mp3 or wav then send them over to me i would be more than happy to help out. If they are on tapes as you say then a simple double ended male 3.5 cm jack would work fine, plug one end of the wire into your tape player head phone socket, the other into your computer wave in and just record it to your computer, i don't know if any one can be arsed to do this but if say; someone didn't want to type them all out but they wanted to help in some way then this would be a perfect oppotunity. There might be some copyright issues though, someone who lives near the maryland museum thing might want to check that out, anyway my offer for help has been submitted and i wait for a reply.
