Tongue piercings...
Hello all I just got my tongue pierced(venom placement) and my mum is now freaking out because of that article about a girl getting a brain infection from her tongue ring. Anyway I was just wondering if anyone had medical info about oral piercings and whatnot. Thanx for your help

Re: Tongue piercings...
Perhaps, Bactine? I know many ppl w/ tongue piercings. If the swelling doesn't go away after a certain period of time, take it out. It may be b/c they didn't pierce it properly. I've never heard of the story your mother told you, however.

Re: Tongue piercings...
youll just want to be careful for infection, and make sure that our bady can take to the metal. you could be allergic t the metal, and yourbody will reject it. other that you should be fine. your mother heard a story that is untrue in all probability. you will not get brain damage by poking a hole in your tongue.

Re: Tongue piercings...
Yeah, I think your mother tried to use the "scare" tactic.

Re: Tongue piercings...
would i be less likely to get infection from a tongue piercing than a lip piercing..... is it the other way round or is there the same chance of infection??

Re: Tongue piercings...
ewwwww bactine would taste nasty. i don't think bactine is made for interior use. use listerine 3-4 times a day for a tongue piercing. you have to be careful not to overdo it, as you can burn your tongue w/ listerine. it peels. :P

Re: Tongue piercings...
the story my mum read was true it happened to a girl in the states there was a whole bunch of crap about it in the papers and what not in canada... but what can ya do the chances of that are very slim i'm not worried about it myself i just wanted some info about it so my mum can calm down and stop trying to make me take my tongue rings out(she thinks that because i have 2 it's a greater risk)
Infestation:a lip piercing is a lot more of a pain in the ass to take care of cuz you have to use antibacterial mouth wash and wash the outside with antibacterial soap... but both are great piercings and if you take care of them correctly they shouldn't give you any problems.
a really good site to find stuff out about body piercing is www.bme.freeq.com they have just about any piercing or body mod you can think of on there

Re: Tongue piercings...
your tongue is more likely to get infected, in my estimation. you have to clean your mouth with listerine (the brown kind not the green or any other) constantly. i had my tongue pierced for years but took it out about a year ago. i took out my earrings as well, i had a 6 gauge through each ear, and my tongue. the only thing i left in was my libree(sp??)

Re: Tongue piercings...
First let me say that I'm not saying that the story isn't true: I need to research it first. But I am saying that just because your mom read it in the papers and that it was all over the place don't mean squat. ULs spread by these means and the news people don't always check their source or story before printing it.

Brain Infection was Meningitis. One could get Meningitis from touching a dirty sink or someones then touching their eye or ear could get Meningitis as well. Its a very common bacteria (Usually Streptococcal) but very few people come down with the condition known as meningitis. Most outbreaks of Meningitis are caused by Viris not bacteria. so its possible she got this brain disease from a viris she had and an infection on her tongue lowered her imune system causing her to have it. no one can know for sure. But why the fuck would anyone shove a stub through their tongue anyways?

Re: Tongue piercings...
Because everyone else is doing it. Think about it, if it wasn't a popular thing how many people do you think would have it?
