Re: dog or no dog
a pure bred what kind of pit?
pit are all right. they are not the smartest but not the dumbest.
trust me though, if you do get it and start beating it around in hopes of making it the "toughest" pit around, then your chances of losing your arm will be great.
just take care of it and show it love and it will never turn on you. At least the odds of it turning on you would be just as small as a lab turning on you.
pitbulls are not bad dogs, its just a reputation they got from being bred to fight, which in turn leads to then turning on their owners.
you should check to see if its parents have any violent tendencies as well.
how much are they selling it for? my guess would be right aroun 400 bucks.

Re: dog or no dog
They are great, sweet, extremely loyal dogs! Especially if the gene pool is veryfiably pure w/ no "bred for brawling" instances present. Sometimes I wonder if the pain they experience when having their tails cropped and their ears shaped doesn't contribute to the unfriendly attitudes of some of them. It's really a pretty barbaric surgery(ies) I'd say get the dog and leave the tail and ears alone! Also be sure and get the shots done as indicated. Also, nothing worse than a cute little puppy sufferinn, and I mean suffering!, from parvo! Be sure the environment he is coming from is clean and that none of the other dogs there are sick! Find out how many litters the bitch has had and ask if they've ever had any problem with puppies being returned or sick. Ask what the refund/exchange policy is, seems fucked up to treat an animal like a durable good, but some breeders have pretty strict policies that you don't have much recourse against if you are at some point having a problem, especially if you sign anything.......
They will take a bullet for you if that's their job(r.i.p. Sluggo) My favorite dogs are samoyed's they are so totally laid back, patient and cool!

Re: dog or no dog
Raise it as a fighting dog and you will almost certainly be maimed beyond recognition. I'll laugh at you. Laugh at the silly little man who likes to talk like a big tough man to all his internet friends. Laugh at the silly little man with a steel pin in his thigh.

Re: dog or no dog
dont get its tail cut off if you want it to have good balance. the ears do look better when they are cropped though.

due to selective breeding, trimming the ears and tail (in some cases) can prevent ear infections and other problems later on. you could be doing your dog a favor or doing it for no reason, but mostly i think it's just cosmetic. pits can be super nice but you have to refrain from showing the dog violence, cause if they bite you their jaws lock and they instinctively won't let go. i read a news article about a friendly pit who didn't like the sound of this one cars motor as it would pass her house she would flip out every day. one day the car was coming by and stopped at the stop sign, she got loose and attacked the car. she locked onto the rear tire and flattened the fucking thing. and this dog was a family dog and had previously never hurt a fly..... so just be careful.

Re: dog or no dog
Selective breeding? I can see what you mean, never in 4yrs. of working with vets have I seen either surgery performed for any other than cosmetic reasons. The tail cropping is generally done when the puppies are just a few days old and since they are so young cannot be anesthitized. I hate assisting in that one! And the ear cropping! good god, it is done with scissors.... Dogs are extremely loyal and generally put up with alot from their owners as opposed to visa versa. It is alot more common for owners to "turn" on their dogs, abandoning them, giving them away or having them put to sleep just because of behaviors totally unrelated to loyalty that they don't want to deal with. If you are serious about beating a dog to death don't get a really smart one or he might figure out who you are. Too bad I cannot manipulate reality, if I could I'd turn madcow007 into a dog and give him to you. Good luck and I hope you find a dog you will be happy with and visa-versa! What do you want the dog to do? different breeeds have different specialties. Just curious.

Re: dog or no dog
Pit bull is not a breed. Its a term used for any dog that is bred to fight. Terriors are the most common. Thats why a Pit Bull is dangerous is because he is genetically geared to attack and fight.
worst K-9 of all is a wolf. You cant really tame these fuckers. People claim they do but if you get Wolf and try to stair it down it will turn on your ass.

Re: dog or no dog
you're right, you can't tame them per-se, their instinct is to be alpha, dominant. as long as you show dominant behavior (ie: lots of playing with you always placing a hand or limb on their shoulder, or putting your head on top of theirs, or as they get older and their instinct to challenge grows, holding them prone and lightly biting the top of their muzzle) to them from birth, you have no problems. they will not try to challenge your *alpha* position in the *pack*. staring at them is confrontational, and even a submissive wolf feels threatened by a direct stare, and is going to defend itself. dogs don't have the instinctual drive that wolves do, you don't have to treat them with such dominant behavior. they already know their place, they've been bred for ages to be domesticated. that may be the reason people feel that wolves cannot be tamed or domesticated, to most people a wolf is a dog and can be treated like one. but they do make loving loyal pets when they are raised correctly.
oops.. forgot about the pits... pits do make excellant, loyal and protective pets when raised correctly. beating any dog (the way most pits are *trained*) is going to make it fearfully submissive instead of loyally submissive. dogs can and do hold resentment, and a fearfully submissive dog will become aggressive given the chance.

Re: dog or no dog
Somebody in this thread already told you to get a cat... I'd follow their advice. My neighbors used to have a pit bull, it terrorized my entire neighborhood until someone shot it in the night. I would never keep an animal that could kill me if it turned on me, no matter how loyal I thought it was.

Re: dog or no dog
I personaly own a brown doberman pincher. Im very proud of it, but its a pain to feed it, wash it, walk it, ... ect. so dont ask yourself if you want a pittbull, ask yourself if you want a dog
