I got tired of Windows ME so I decided to try and load Windows 98 SE on my computer. But what happened is i started noticing all kinds of missing drivers. shit wasnt working right. not to mention my mic didnt work untill i found the proper driver to download from MS website.

Also there is this lame "Updater Reminder" thing that comes on every day. If i click OK it doesnt do shit. its not configured to my @home internet connection. and I cant find out how to remove it from the system. So every day I have to click "Remind me Tomorrow". Does anyone know how the fuck to get this fucking thing off of my system. I even went as far as "run/msconfig" and unchecked everything on the list so nothing would load up. yet there it was. The onlything in the fucking task bar.

FUCK what is MS problem. If i get Linux it wont run half of my shit like my art programs or cool games. and their emulators dont work well I heard.

And what the hell is up with this no DOS thing in Windows ME? its like using Windows2k. its pointless. Its like i might as well go back to win3x. Its as if MS is regressing. Why are they trying to control the way I want to do computing?

I heard c++ programing wont even work on ME. Without a true DOS screen you cant access it. Although i havnt started learning it I find that fucking disturbing.

So please tell me how to remove that stupid ass update reminder thing. its driving me batty.

I used to use Win98 untill i upgraded to ME and I disabled the feature in Win98 but i cant remember for sure how i done it.

If you are having to many problems after putting Win98 on after WinME then it might be worth partitioning the hard drive and reformat it again. Im not sure if it will work but it may be worth a try.

no im using ME now. I said x98 SE was buggy. so i meant i went back to ME. i have it partitioned but wanted my space back so I got rid of 2k. but i guess what i really want to know his how do i get rid of the Updater reminder in ME

the problem is not the OS or the software or whatever , its the user , r u sure that you know what you are DOING !!!!!

PS IF you click ok on the update and let it do its thing , you wont see it anymore

XFILES dont be a dork. Every fucking week it prompts you. Thats why i dont even bother with it anymore. And now when i click on update it doesnt do shit.

Ok Witch what you need to do is go into ControlPanel and double click on Automatic Updates and in the box what opens up just select the "Turn off automatic updating" feature, that should do it m8.

You can still get to a DOS prompt in Windows ME, it's just a bit more difficult. Instead of having the shortcut there for you, you have to explicitly run command.com.

Even win2k has a method of getting to a pseudo-DOS prompt, although it changes there. I'm pretty sure that ME is a true dos prompt, though, as it's essentially 98 with a few extra UI changes.

thats nto a true DOS, its run out of windows. if you tried to deltree E or reformat it would say :"Not a true DOS prompt.. Cant perform in Windows" or something.

anytime dos is run from windows it's not a true dos environment.

and the run/command is the same in 95, 98, me and 2k.

the problem with 2000 is most applications haven't converted to 2000 functionality because it's basically nt,

and since most people still have 98, unless you buy business software its hard to find one that's 2000 compatible.

my problem with microsoft is that they should make os's last for at least 5 years. instead of every other year coming out with a new one that has problems running all your old software.

The run command executes a
shell $a

$a being what ever you type into it. Ie its still handled by windows. So you can run Calc.exe for example, and windows will handle it.

Running command.com, shows you whats happening, failters to windows and if windows won't handle it, dos will. (Type calc.exe in a maximized dos box ! You'll end up back in windows).

You can force windows to treat a program as a dos one, if you create a shortcut and edit enough things.

Other than that, Wine is good under Linux. Runs most (but not all) windows programs. Linux also has problems though. Just most people prefer not to talk about them.
