Smart Card?
Im watching the CEO of Sun (We put the . in dot com) and he is talking about a smart card. I dont know enough about computers to know what this is exactly. can someone tell me what it is. He made it sound like a credit card that can hold Gigs of information.
Is this the device that is part of the new wireless service? its like a wireless modem? He was saying that just having a card in the room without touching a computer device can still upload information on that computer. Is this an exaggeration of the truth? I know i saw something on TV about how these guys in the presedio (an old army base in san francisco turned .com business park) has these cell dishes that if you have some kind of card and are in range you can actually transfer data on your laptop at about 5 megs a second. so is this the same thing? why isnt it a standard.
and the other cool thing he spoke of was that some company is coming out with a wireless phone device that will have full motion video. not choppy 2 frames a sec but more like 24 or 30fps. He thinks Bill Gates has stagnated technology. he says we could have been much more advanced if Bill Gates didnt force computer companies to run his Microsoft platform.
I think in short the CEO of SUN is saying that computers today are good for artwork and media design and sharing family photos. but the World Wide Web was just the beginning of what is to come. it serves no purpose in the real world. its not designed for business. its to slow and bulky. And i agree. although i dont plan on tossing my desktop into the garbage i think laptops are still to big for people to carry around and one day you will be able to phone people world wide on a watch with a TV monitor and make bank transactions without needed to punch pin numbers or swipe cards or buy grocieries with the same process or know your exact location, where the cheapest gas station is, how far the nearest hotel is all in one little wristwatch and i think that will come sooner then anyone thinks.

Re: Smart Card?
I think he was talking about the identity cards that people use for Sun Rays. The sun rays are actually pretty cool. They're these little dumb terminal boxes that look all slick with a little slot in it where you can stick your card in. You log in and it comes up with your workspace, anywhere in the building or within the entire network. From what I've seen of the sun internal network, you can take that one card and go any SUN office in the world, stick that card into one of the sun rays, and get your workspace. THATS really cool..
as for bill gates stagnating technology, feh. He's a dickhead, but he hasn't "forced" anyone to run windows, yer fooling yourself if you think so. He realized that people are generally stupid and created an OS to fit...
