Political correctness-as dangerous as stereotyping?
OK, im not some brainless moron who doesnt realise that stereotypes can do real social damage. I understand that stereotpes help reinforce some pretty crap social problems ie. sexism, racism, and pretty much every other 'ism'. But its getting to the stage where you cant point out a cultural or social difference without having some political correctness freak jumping you.
I think that there are differences between cultures; nearly every Asian person i have ever met has had a far superior work ethic than your average white British person, and has gone on to achieve far greater things. However, i mention this cultural difference and pretty much always lynched. I have met many Americans, and i have no qualms about saying that the majority of them are far more freindly and polite than your average Brit. But along with this zeal that they have, they seem a little more gullable than your more astute but ignorant arrogant Brit.
Im certainly not racist, and im not foolish enough to expect people to live up to a stereotype, or blanket an entire group under one catagory. But im not afraid to point out that differences exist. If we dont realise that they exist how can we ever expect to evolve as a multi-cultural society. Its getting to the point where political correctness is reaching absurdity, and actually becoming repressive to a freedom of speech.

Re: Political correctness-as dangerous as stereotyping?
Well said, Plato, but I have one problem with what you said...
How are we going to evolve as a multi cultural society? Since when did that ever become a possibility for success? Multi-ethnicism is one thing, muli cultures is quite another.
Multi-culturalism, is that an oxy moron? Plato, it's making my state and soon country, bleed. It's odd. I am a minority for the first time in my life. I found out about two weeks ago, officially. It was always the whites that looked over everyone else because, the situation was that even if you added all the others together, we would still out number them. Now, if you do that they out number us. It provided a sense of peace knowing we were always in control. And even a greenspam-type can see the trend. We are going extinct, percentage wise.
Multi culturalism, at least in its early stages, aka NOW, will be cool, you get to eat a lot of different foods, etc, but when we {white bread) become insignificant, don't expect the new majorities (latinos) to look and treat you as well as we did. You should hear the crap latin ppl say about asians on the bus in downtown Los Angeles. It will get scary. 100 years and this country will be destroyed by it's own doing. By pushing our constitution to the farthest reaches it could go. 25 years and the world will see something substancial.

Re: Political correctness-as dangerous as stereotyping?
you can stereotype everything.
psycologists stereotype;
a psychological profile is a stereotype;
lower; middle; upperclass is a stereotype.
bart simpson is a stereotype;
al bundy is a stereotype
archie bunker is a stereotype;
the jackass who has to start counting change in his pocket for the 23 cents instead of getting 77 cents back is a stereotype.
the quarterback banging the cheerleader is a stereotype.
stereotypes are personality quirks that are shared with individuals across great distances.
without stereotypes entertainment would be boring.
without stereotypes everything that happened would be new.
ever notice its the guy who stole 25 bucks to buy crack that says stereotypes are a bad thing.
have you ever judged somebody you just met based on how their personality resembles someone else you know.
THAT'S A FUCKING STEREOTYPE.

Re: Political correctness-as dangerous as stereotyping?
and you can't base a society on multiple cultures.
the society that originally left it's culture should leave it behind as well; or you had no business leaving in the first place.
when you have conflicting cultures you have trouble.
why are these problems so prevalent in places like la and new york and chicago instead of gary indiana; fargo north dakota; or sioux city iowa.
too many different people with different backgrounds.
i can show up at a party with a couple hundred people and see personality conflicts all over that with the addition of alcohol will always escalate to conflict.
multiply these 200 by 10,000 and that's what the odds become in larger cities.
to see this one need only look at the middle east;
after 10,000 years of recorded history and all of our technological advances they still fight the exact same war they fought 10,000 years ago;
why;
we can't accept differing cultures; and cultural pride in america has us fighting each other instead of realizing we are all americans.

Re: Political correctness-as dangerous as stereotyping?
Political Correctness is thought control and therefore dangerous. Racism, in one form or another, will always be with us - tribal warfare is racism, gang warfare is racism. Racism is not about colour. Colour comes into it simply because you can SEE the difference, but anyone who is not part of your 'tribe' is your enemy, sadly it is a natural state, which needs effort to overcome.
