The Metric System
This post is for Americans still in school. (I'm in school at this very moment I figured out how to get past the faggoty blocks they put on netscape)
anyway at this very instant my science teacher is lecturing a friend of mine that he doesn't understand "The importance of the metric system, the United States is going to change in the next 5 years and your going to have to know them to be a success blah blah fuckedy blah
I agree that the metric system is a lot easier and makes a lot more since than our system, but honestly, in America the only people (besides teachers) talking about metrics is drug dealers "come er' man wanna buy an ounce? my nigga' leroy just got a kilo from some guy in Mexico?" and I personally don't think of that as success...
America is the only country aside from New Zeland (lousy sheep fuckers) that still doesn't use metrics.. anybody know why that is?
sorry if this post doesn't make much since I shut down 9/10th of my brain when I get to school so I don't snap and kill everybody... funny I still manage to pass everything

Re: The Metric System
... I have a feeling Americans are about to be insulted here... but... it's hard to change something you've been using for, like, forever... I think theirs alot of problems in the schools.. when I was in school there they didn't really teach that much about da metric system.. and many classes still sorta used feet, ounces, gallons... if they expect to meet dat deadline then they really gotta get themselves going... After living in Europe for a year I got the idea down, but when it comes to visualizing distances or something like that I still think in feet... it'sa habbit.

Re: The Metric System
In my school they use metrics for about 1/3 of physics and all of chemestry. That's it. Most people are just trained not to think about metrics here (america), that's why the mars which cost billions of tax money crashed. They forgot to use metrics.

Re: The Metric System
Okay, could anybody explain this to me: A gram is the mass of a cubic centimiter or one mililiter of pure water.
What's the basis for the once?

Sorry Redrover, I tink you miss de point. ANY system of weights and measures is an artificial construct imposed upon the world at large. The true advantage of the 'old' imperial measurement system, is that it is 'personal', being based on sizes which can be readily imagined and therefore estimated - feet, inches, chains, hands (if you are into horses) etc, are all based, very roughly, on multiples of the size of average body parts. The metric system is no more TRUE than the imperial, it is merely based on different, more artificial, constructs. As to the mars probe crashing due to non use of metric - an urban myth. I know engineers from all over the world, and if there is one anywhere who can't do metric/imperial conversions, in his head, to an accuracy of three places, then he needs shooting now! ------------------ The Rev Spooner says I am a Shining Wit

Re: The Metric System
But Rob, one meter is equal to one ten millionth of the distance from the equator to the pole mesured on a meridian, meaning that even if all the meters on earth were distroyed and nobody could be sure how long a meter was, we could still figure out the length with some precise astronomical observations, and therefore keep all the equations and constants attribuated to the metric system. But if all the rulers on earth dissapeard, would you know precisely how long a foot was?
Oh, and that NASA engeneer thought that a mesurement in yards was a mesurement in meters, an error that can easely be understood, because they are aproximately the same ize, so it wasn't a conversion error.

Re: The Metric System
if an anti-metric terrorist group known as "fuck the metric bastards" through an under ground effort destroyed all known meter sticks the counter terrorist organization known as "slugs and furlongs are gay" would do as follows....
On October 20,1983 the meter was redefined again. The definition states that the meter is the length of the path traveled by light in vacuum during a time interval of 1/299,792,458 of a second. The speed of light is c = 299,792,458 m/s The second is determined to an uncertainty, U = 1 part in1014 by the Cesium clock. The General Conference made the iodine stabilized Helium-Neon laser a recommended radiation for realizing the meter at this time. The wavelength of this laser is lHeNe=632.99139822 nm with an estimated relative standard uncertainty (U) of + or -2.5x10^-11. (realy fucking accurate) In all of these changes in definition, the goal was not only to improve the precision of the definition, but also to change its actual length as little as possible.
armed with this information they could then build new meter stick factories. all would be right in the world. fuck that outer space measure the earth equator to pole bull shit.
ff you want more of this fucking super cool information go to these unit terrorist web sites http://www.mel.nist.gov/div821/museum/timeline.htm http://ts.nist.gov/ts/htdocs/230/235/appxc/appxc.htm#2
thank you that is all.

Re: The Metric System
No, you have still missed the point. However you define any measurement, it is not real. It is a relative assessment. Define length as a thousandth of the circumference of whose planet? define it according to the speed of light. whose time? time is NOT a constant, even on earth (ask Albert!), and certainly it is meaningless away from earth, as the basis of definition is to do with the speed of rotation of the planet. Time and measurement do not exist. they are a construct. Remember the words of Neitszche "There are no facts, merely interpretations"
