So it's apparent now that "mad cow disease" or what ever all its offspring are, are caused by surges in cannabilism. First in native human tribes that ritually ate the brains of their dead, and now cows that became omnivores; eating not just cud and shit, but also small cow bi-product scraps scattered throughout their grazing land. Though it has now been banned almost everywhere to feed cattle meat who says no one throws a hamburger out their window while driving through farm country? Call me paranoid, but if you read enough into the scientific evidence about this shit you'd want to stop eating anything that could POSSIBLY have any SLIGHT chance of eating meat instead of sticking to being an herbivore like it was predestined to be before. Fuck did anyone see those video's of the people that contracted the human strain of mad cow disease? Scary shit. It varies on how much you eat to, if you contract it or not. People can eat contaminated meat and not contract it. The footage of the first known humans in the 50s in the Pacific Islands to have it was fuckin sick. They were like limp rubber dolls. ICK!

My love for a good steak is worth the risk. Until I start getting symptoms. But I think a human getting the disease from eating beef is pretty rare. But when 5 people get the same thing, the media calls it an epidemic.

The prion which causes BSE and vCJD exists only within the brain and spinal cord matter of the cow, so you`d be pretty much safe to eat anything that is recognisable as part of a cow, i.e. a steak or joint of beef.
Even if there WERE any trace of infected matter present it would only be on the outside of the meat and during cooking would be subjected to temperatures sufficient to destroy it. The risk really came from processed beef products where the possibility of the presence of brain/spinal cord material is more likely, and also because any such matter could be distributed right through the product meaning it might not reach sufficient temperatures during cooking to render it harmless.

We all have to make choices about what we eat, the best you can do is make them informed choices and weigh up what you think the risks are. If I took heed of every food safety scare that comes up I`d be existing on ricecakes by now (although I`m sure someone will probably now inform me of why ricecakes are bad for you!)

what about the Foot and Mouth disease. they say it canty be passed from cattle and lamb to humans. So why fucking kill all the anmals then. it may not be attractive but its not gonna kill anyone. Im sure it may just run its course. if you fucking kill all the animals who are suspected of having it cant that in fact be worst in the long run. i mean maybe the viris strain will mutate into something the world cant stop and may in fact become a pandemic to humans as well.

Keep your wig on you do have kind of a point, but the fact is that people HAVE been infected by eating infected beef products, and not just brains from the end of a coathanger, as u so picturesquly phrased it. What do u think went/goes into some of these beef products?! Ok, so the fact is that there are "stringent" guidelines now concerning the method of slaughter and the disposal of brain and spinal cord tissue from cows. How strictly individual meat processing plants follow it is anyones guess though.

The scary part is it can take ten years to develop.. ten years before you show symptoms, ten years before they can actually diagnose it , ten years. You could eat your beef meal tomorrow and not know it is gonna kill ya until ten years later. The consequence doesn't just kick in right way like AIDS or cancer. The reason it is an epidemic is 'cause it is gonna be one. In ten years suddenly thousands of people (predicted in Great Britain) are going to get sick.. fatally and then you'll know why it's so bad. People are only realizing te dangers now.. and they don't even seem to be catching the danger of the issue. Peoples are so use to beef... damn, it's a normal every day thing and it doesn't seem like people are dying, so why not. In ten years or so we'll see.

As for mouth and foot, while dangerous for cow health and beef production, I didn't think it was dangerous for humans. Is it? Poor British, such a huge industry of theirs crushed by these things...

Foot and mouth disease doesn't kill humans but it renders the lives of the livestock unberable. They get sick and die off. Meaning that the meat might be good for consumption but your suddenly stuck with a few hundred times the amount of meat you need to suffice demand (dumping the price of meat to such low levels as to bankrupt all the farmers in america by the way) and no living livestock to breed new heards.

I know this is a bit off the subject but in the San Francisco Bay Area there has been a outbreak of Meningitis and 3 kids have died in the bay area. but they say that 75-80% of all americans will at some point get the bacteria that causes this inflammation of the brain and most wont die.. but then they said 10-20% will die if the bacteria mutates into the meningitis blood infection. i guess they mean that the bacteria is harmless unless it mutates in your bloodstream then once that happens 10-20% will die from it. and its almost 100% curable if you take 1 dose of cipro antibiotics. even in this day and age they cant screen for it because its outbreaks are rare and shortlived. i think thats the scariest fucking thing.

someone mentioned that the disease is killed when you cook the meat- wrong. it is carried in proteins which are not killed during cooking. proteins survive, which makes it so scary because it attacks victims proteins and so on. rarely do diseases manifest themselves by slowly degrading proteins, especially brain matter, so we thought. we were wrong. more than 5 people had it. it almost wiped out an entire pacific island in the 50s and then kept changing what species it was primaraly attacking until it came back to humans again. fuck steak ill take chicken and a veggie burger.

What I said, in fact, is that exposed to high enough temperatures for long enough, the prion (the form of protein in question) is rendered harmless as it becomes altered.
This is unlikely to happen in the centre of, say, a burger being grilled for around 10 minutes. Having said that I completely understand your concerns and indeed, no longer eat red meat myself.

I just learned that it takes at least 7 days for red meat to digest in your system. Now, take into account that the inside of your body is 98.6 degrees and taking into account that your stomach and intestines are full of catalystic bacteria, that would make your insides even hotter in certain places, so to speak. Now, imagine if you left a hunk of red (let's say cow) meat in a room heated to 98.6 degrees for 7 days. What would that meat look like in 7 days? Just think about it.

I think that when I eat red meat, I have to shit a few hours later, not seven days.

But also take in effect that all along your digestive track, the bacteria contained in the meat is affected by gastric acids and multiple enzymes that are aimed at breaking it down so if it really takes 7 day to digest a peice of red meat (which I seriously doubt), the bacteria won't have a chance to grow.
